Music Review: A Huge Disappointment

The title of my review says it all. I was very discouraged when I heard this album. I love all of the musicians on this album: Jim Hall, who should just retire, Bill Frisell, who doesn't sound like himself on this release, Scott Colley and Joey Baron who are uncharacteristically stale here.
Perhaps my expectations were very high for this release, considering that it has been 13 years since Hall and Frisell played together on a recording session ("Dialogues" 1995 Telarc), but honestly this record just falls flat on its face. There's no fire, no substance, and it almost seems like Hall and Frisell are going through the motions. I have been tremendously disgusted with Hall's output these last years. It has been very weak. He's just not that great anymore, but for anyone interested in Hall, knows that his best playing was with Paul Desmond, Art Farmer, and Sonny Rollins. Hall's own records were hit and miss, mostly miss. The same could be said about Frisell, whom I admire and still do, but these past few years he has seemed to have hit some kind of block. His performance on "Hemispheres" only reinforces this fact for me.
Since this doesn't do anything for me musically, one has to consider it's collectable value and that's really the only reason I'm going to keep it. Thumbs down for this release.
Special note: I am probably the harshest critic when it comes to Frisell and Hall, because I admire their work so much, but don't let my review stop you from enjoying the music. After all, this review, is just my opinion.
