Music Review: thank you, Jim !!!

Jim Croce was one of the very best artists we ever saw; and his voice still speaks to us decades after his untimely death. Jim could take a ballad and infuse it with so much passion and energy that he really stood out from almost all of his peers. This is a strong single CD compilation of his work. The quality of the music is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done.
The CD starts off with Jim doing one of his very best known numbers, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim." This tune showcases the rebellious side of Jim Croce, a rebellious quality that we all have deep down in our hearts. The guitar work couldn't be better and Jim never misses a beat! "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" is easily a major highlight of this album and it's one of my personal favorites. In addition, "One Less Set of Footsteps" is a tender but strong ballad that deals with a love that no longer burns brightly. "One Less Set of Footsteps" has a melody that is somewhat upbeat and this belies the seriousness of the lyrics--yet it all works very well. "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" is a masterpiece for obvious reasons. I have yet to meet too many people who never heard "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown."
"I Got a Name" and "Time in a Bottle" are so beautiful that you'll probably never forget them; "I Got A Name" strikes me with its beauty and that's grand. "Time In A Bottle" gets a very sensitive treatment and this charms me. Great! Listen also for "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song;" this ode to love takes a lesser known approach to the affection a man feels for his woman; and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" shines bright on this album. There's also the very entertaining "Workin' at the Car Wash Blues."
"Roller Derby Queen" really rocks with an awesome side dish of country; and the melody is very catchy. "New York's Not My Home" also shines even though it sends the opposite message to "New York, New York;" but then again who says you have to love New York City, anyway?
"Lover's Cross" places Jim right in the spotlight--just where he belongs! I also really enjoy hearing "A Long Time Ago;" the guitar work stuns me with its natural beauty and "A Long Time Ago" is a most pensive number. The CD ends with Jim Croce performing "Thursday." "Thursday" has an elegant arrangement and this ends the CD on a strong note (no pun intended).
Jim Croce gave us so much in the short time he spent on this Earth; and this single CD retrospective helps us celebrate his life and his gifts to us all. This is probably best for casual fans; more serious fans of Jim Croce will want more comprehensive and obscure material by Jim.
