Music Review: Simple Things? Wait a Minute...

Many of Jim Brickman's songs are similar in their arrangement. In comparison to past releases, "Simple Things" is just another dozen newly penned songs with light accompaniment with some rather odd melodies.As is his way, Brickman brings in guest vocalists on the album as well as guest musicians to enhance his new recording. The title cut is a vocal by Rebecca Lynn Howard and was co-written by Nashville recording artist Beth Nielson Chapman. While it is released to selected adult contemporary radio markets for play, it seems to be geared towards the late night love song shows. Does it have the workings of a hit? Maybe. If you listen to soft rock 9 to 5 no repeat songs during the work day, then you may hear it as just background music. It's lively, yet nothing like Brickman's more powerful radio singles.
Working with All-4-One on the bonus track, "It Must Be You", Brickman really journeys away from his circle of guest artists. Among them being Michael W. Smith, Martina McBride, Kenny Loggins, to name a few. The song really doesn't fit on the album, judging by its R&B pop feel. It causes one to wonder why and what for. Tracy Silverman accompanying on viola adds some depth to a few of the piano based compostions. Silverman worked with Brickman on the last CD release, "My Romance: An Evening With Jim Brickman". Tom Douglas'vocal on "A Mother's Day" is a little closer to Brickman's familiar sentimental ballads.
All in all, the album doesn't seem to have the right kind of continuity. Make no mistake, Brickman does have some pretty melodies to share with short titles given to them. The main problem is consistency and choice. To wonder, "Jim, what are you doing on this album?" is likely to happen. Be wary. The artful inserts and the back, front covers will make you want to listen. And then you'll ask, "Am I hearing this right?"
