Music Review: Worth buying for the vocals alone

My husband and I listened to our vinyl copy of "A Touch on the Rainy Side" last night after it had sat collecting dust since the early '80s, and we were blown away (again) by Jesse's vocals. They are in turn achingly beautiful, soulful, Southern-gospel joyful (we speculated that Lyle Lovett may have listened to Jesse's "I'm Looking for a Miracle," which foreshadows Lyle's own wonderful gospel-y tunes), melancholy and plaintive, bouncy/jaunty ... the man could sing just about anything. He has unerring, right-on-the-money pitch, beautiful tone, an amazing range -- and, maybe best of all, his singing always sounds absolutely natural, unstrained, whatever the style.
Fantastic vocals aside, I think the songs themselves here are fine, and a few of them, excellent.
Until I looked up this album here on Amazon, I didn't know that it had been panned. Unfortunately, I haven't heard much other Jesse Winchester to compare it with, except for a handful or two of individual songs (which are all excellent.) If this is a "bad" Jesse Winchester album, then I have to agree with another Amazon reviewer who said that even a "bad" JW album is better than a lot of other artists' "good" stuff.
I think this album is worth having. I'll go out on a limb and say it's not Jesse's best, but then, his best must be awfully damn good. I was so impressed with him (or re-impressed, I guess, after not having heard any of his music for decades) that now I plan to acquire his whole catalog, probably starting with his 1970 self-titled debut album, which contains the classic "Yankee Lady."
