Music reviews of Ultimate CollectionMusic Review: A Vastly Underrated Musician
I remember when Jesse Johnson made his debut as a solo artist. At the time, I was just a kid so I never even knew he was a member of the band The Time (one of my all time favorite bands). My first introduction to him was through the song and video, "I Want My Girl". For some reason, this song struck a cord with me and has stuck with me all these years. I'm not sure why Jesse Johnson never became a "major star"-he should have been-maybe he was a victim of the times or maybe a victim of A&M records. Either way, Jesse Johnson is one of the most underrated and underappreciated guitar players with which I am aquainted. In my opinion, he is one of the best. Unfortunately, for whatever reason-possibly because he was constantly being compared to Prince, his guitar skills have often been overlooked. Although I love his music from the past it pales in comparison to the music he does now. But Jesse Johnson proved that he could be more than just The Time's guitarist and the oft-said "Prince Protege". He could write, produce, arrange, engineer and play multiple instruments. In some ways I wish he would have done the music that he really wanted to do-blues and rock-but given the musical landscape of the time I'm sure the execs wanted formulaic Prince sounding albums so he obliged them. I am happy that he allowed the release of this compilation because it allows his fans (folks like me) to be reintroduced and reacquainted with Mr. Johnson's work. This collection includes his hits like the aforementioned "I Want My Girl", "Can You Help Me", "Be Your Man", "Crazay" (with the legendary Sly Stone), "Black In America" (a song that also stuck with me), "Love Struck", and "Baby Let's Kiss". It even includes a previously unreleased track "Vibe" which is very sexy and it has become one of my new favorites. I would have preferred if they would have included "Do Yourself A Favor", "Drive Yo Cadillac", some extended mixes and some tracks from his 1996 release Bare My Naked Soul which is his best work at the time of this writing. But I'm just happy that someone thought enough to compile a collection of his work-so I can overlook what's missing and appreciate what's here.
