Music Review: Just not the same

Don't get me wrong, I (for the most part) enjoy this recording, but it's just not the same. If some of the songs were reorchestrated or something to that affect, I would be fine with it...but when you change entire scenes (the courtroom or the 9:00 deadline for Joe to go back), song structure (Applegate and Lola singing "Two Lost Souls" or almost all of "Six Months Out Of Every Year), climactic revisions (Joe hitting a home run rather than catching the final out), etc. then you start to really tamper with and damage a wonderful show. I have done the original version (I was both Joe's) and saw this version on Broadway (original revival cast) and in Philly (Jerry Lewis) and I think it works better the old way.I do enjoy quite a few things on the recording. First and foremost, Victor Garber who makes a delightfully sly and playfully malicious Applegate and gives a wonderful rendition of "Those Were The Good Old Days". Jarrod Emick has possibly one of the strongest and clearest voices around today. From his first note to his last, he is a strong and also sentimental presence. It was a pleasure to see him do this in person. Dick Latessa as Benny Van Buren and the rest of the Senators are light and comic as well as determined and fun. I am also quite fond of Dennis Kelly's Joe Boyd who sings "Goodbye, Old Girl" with such a tender passion. I must say that, even though I am a big fan, I was not thrilled with Bebe Neuwirth's Lola. For some reason (and I couldn't put my finger on why) she just didn't work for me. I think she was a little too over the top when Lola's specialty is her subtleness (except in "Whatever Lola Wants", of course). I was also not fond of Vicki Lewis as Gloria Thorpe. Her voice just grates on my nerves even though she is a pretty good actress.
If you want the true theatrical experience of Damn Yankees, stick with the original, but if you like changes and drastic revisions, this is a good CD for you.
