I've loved this show from the first time I saw it in 2008 in a terrific production by the best theater company in Boston, the Huntington. The 2008 Boston Globe's rave review started, this is "a show you probably haven't seen". She Loves Me is the stealth musical.
Two years later and She Loves Me was back in the Boston area, this time an excellent amateur production, and I decided it was time to buy the CD. Unable to decide I bought both the original cast album starring Barbara Cook and the 1993 Broadway revival cast album.
This show requires eight good singer (7 in the shop and the waiter) all of whom have at least one solo, and amazingly both CDs have only seven good singers. Whoever plays Mr. Maraczek on the 1993 revival CD can't sing at all. He is a disaster, so one of best songs of the show (Days Gone By) is lost. In the original cast album the weak singer is Ilona. She has a squeaky mickey mouse voice, but since she has good comic inflections and timing she gets by.
The sound editor of the 1993 revival did some strange things. At the end of 'No More Candy' a male voice barks "I'll take it". Not only is this jarring, but it makes no sense as it is apparent from the lyrics that Amalia is pitching the musical candy box ("it's a little like the voice of God...") to a female customer. In the 1963 original 'No More Candy' is nicely set up by a (female) voice asking "How functional?", while the 1993 version has no setup. And 1993 has a mind boggling editing error in probably the most famous song in the show. 'Vanilla Ice Cream' is split between two tracks; its beginning tacked onto the end of 'Where's My Shoe'! Did the CD editor ever see the show?
Both CDs sound good when played on my car's auto system. Many songs are equally good on both CDs, but on balance I like the original 1963 version the best. It has a depth and sweetness that I find missing in the 1993 revival, and it's hard to top Barbara Cook.
Two shows have recently gone to Broadway from the Huntington (Present Laughter and 39 Steps), so maybe there's a chance this production will eventually get there too. The 2008 Huntinton production starred Kate Baldwin and Brooks Ashmanskas with Dick Latessa, Jessica Stone and Troy Britton Johnson. In 2009 Kate Baldwin went onto a big success on Broadway starring in Finian's Rainbow.
