It is very gratifying to have this collection of the songs of a great American singer. Particularly since this collection is complete with all of the songs for which he was famous but many many more, some which may be unfamiliar to the listener. His was a true basso voice and he exercised it freely and without strain. Of course he sang many of the songs of his people, perhaps better than anyone else--all heartfelt and with authority! His was a tempestuous life but at this point in time we can sit back and let the music fill our hearts and souls.

Description of The Complete EMI Sessions 1928-1939

170-track digitally remastered 7-CD album set containing all the HMV recordings, as well as the 1928 Columbia recording of 'Ol' Man River' from Show Boat with the Drury Lane chorus and orchestra that was not released until 1976 for contractual reasons. Also included are the two HMV recordings of 'Ol' Man River', the first made in 1930 as a solo with Ray Noble's Orchestra and the second in 1936 with chorus and orchestra conducted by Clifford Greenwood.).
