Jennifer Lopez re-entered the musical scene with her first new studio effort in almost three years not counting her "Greatest Hits" package released in 2003. Jennifer Lopez's musical success is very surprising. While not the most vocally talented, Jennifer has aligned herself with the right producers, had good timing and has a certain charisma that comes through in her music. Although many people have written her off, she has lasted for six years and has amassed close to twenty notable hits, even if they are relatively disposable, pop hits.
Get Right-Produced by Rich Harrison and Cory Rooney, first single off the CD that has a certain energy and a little of the go-go beat. Well, Rich Harrison is the producer of Amerie's "One Thing." It took a while for this song to grow on me because it is something different for Jennifer Lopez. But the beat is really what drives the song and the catchy, infectious chorus. I do not care too much for the sung verses, but the song does work. It probably would have made a good summer song. Unfortunately, the song did not do as well as Jennifer's previous debut singles. A-
Step into My World-Produced by Rodney Jerkins (Darkchild), and Fred Jerkins, this Middle Eastern-influenced cut with a heavy bass line is one of those sultry-sounding songs that is different. It is unique for Jennifer to tackle a song like this and it does not really sound like a Darkchild song. It is surprising that Darkchild in the last year or so has been crafting a diverse array of songs because at his peak, most of his songs started sounding alike. This is not singles material but it is a nice album cut with strong background vocals. A-
Hold you Down-Produced by Nyce Boy, Gregory Bruno and Cory Rooney, featuring Fat Joe and containing elements of "As We Lay" as sung by Shirley Murdock and remade by Kelly Price in 1999. Lopez's second single which unfortunately did not take off. It is a very strong ballad which acknowledges loyalty to someone whether it be friendship or romance. The chorus is very catchy and is almost lullaby-like. The arrangement of the song is almost very subdued but it fits the mood. Fat Joe, who was on Jennifer's 1999 hit "I'm Feelin' So Good" returns with a very mature and on-point rap. As a whole, it is well-arranged and Lopez handles the song well with her limited range. I wished the song could have done better commercially. A+
Whatever you Wanna Do-Produced by Rich Harrison and Cory Rooney, featuring elements of "Con Funk-Shon" as performed by the Nite-Liters, this beat-heavy, vintage-sounding track is kind of reminiscent of Get it Right mainly because it is produced by the same person, Rich Harrison, but the song does not have that commercial appeal like that song does. It works, but it is more of a filler cut. The background vocals are arranged well and the instrumentals in the song are tight, but it is not necessarily a standout. B+
Cherry Pie-Produced by Tim & Bob and Cory Rooney, this mid-tempo that also has that vintage, throwback 80s sound to it is a good song that sounds like one that would have "cherry pie" as its title. It basically discusses how women or people in general are usually attracted to the "bad ones" even though they know they should not be with them. The song does sound kind of cheesy, but it works because it is different from what is out there, and the background vocals are "Cory Rooney" arranged: the typical Cory Rooney arrangement. A
I Got u-Produced by Rodney Jerkins (Darkchild) and Cory Rooney, this beat-heavy song with light Latin tinges interspersed really does not sound like a Darkchild cut in that he has really changed the typical production he had back in the late 90s. The song does work, and of its predecessors, it does have some commercial appeal. I am surprised it was not released as a single. It simply talks about having the person one wants and being grateful for having that person to love. It is a nice Pop&B cut with some nice background vocals and a beat to dance to. A-
Still Around-Produced by Big Boi, Cutmaster Swiff and Cory Rooney, this mid-tempo too has that throwback, old-school feel but you can tell that it's a 21st century song. It is one of those blissful, above-the-clouds/stars songs about someone still being around. It actually sounds similar to material on Jennifer's latest 2002 studio effort. It is filler. It is pop, but it is a good song, nonetheless. B+
Ryde or Die-Produced by Robert Anthony and Cory Rooney, this haunting, mid-tempo with a strong bassline is a very atmospheric cut that has Jennifer setting forth the fact that she would "ryde or die" for the one she is with. It is a style that she has not tackled before not even on this effort. And the vocals are not half-bad on the cut. It is not a really commercial song, but it a nice album cut that does not come across as filler. A-
I, Love-Produced by Tim&Bob and Cory Rooney, probably one of my favorite songs on the CD. It is a mid-tempo with a strong bass/drum presence and has a catchy if sometimes annoying chorus. The song works because it is not your conventional, "I love you" song, but it is arranged differently and is a simple ode to loving someone. The arrangement is what really works as it is somewhat dark and haunting but fits the song well as a whole. I can easily see a video for it, but it is not what is radio-worthy these days so it would not work there. It does have that throwback feel to it as the majority of the songs do. A
He'll Be Back-Produced by Timbaland and Danja, this mid-tempo with that trademark Timbaland, original sound is another standout for me. The title says it all about someone returning even though he has left. This song is an example of why I am angry that Timbaland does not get the credit and support he deserves. Of all the songs, this works well as it has a subtle flute presence that adds another dimension to it. The beat is awesome. The vocals work well. It is just a nice song that stands out from the rest. A+
(Can't Believe) This is Me-Produced by Marc Anthony, this dark ballad with the minor chords and the big production sounds like a Marc Anthony song. Jennifer flexes her vocal muscles a little but the limitations are still evident nonetheless. And because it sounds like a Marc Anthony song, his big voice would have worked better with it. It is good that Jennifer is experimenting, but it seems like she bit off more than she could chew here. Not a bad song, but could have been better in the right person's hands.
Get it Right Remix-With Fabolous who brings an added energy to the song with his trademark lazy-voiced rap.
Overall, the CD works. It is not as ballad-heavy/semi-boring as her debut, On the 6 (1999). It does not contain as much disposable, pop&B as her sophomore effort, JLO (2001). It does work a little better than her 2002 effort. She is experimenting with different musical elements from go-go beats to ballads to R&B to Indian-influenced music. She also sounds better than ever vocally. Too bad this CD has not done as well as its predecessors, all of which are multiplatinum. This has struggled to even go Platinum, but this is evidence that just because something does not sell quantity that it is not quality.
