Music reviews of I Remember Me

Music Review: Jennifer Hudson dawns new day, feeling good on I Remember Me
Rating: 4 Stars

Jennifer Hudson is "feeling good" on the follow up to her Best R&B Album (Grammy) Award winning debut. Dropping songs like "Spotlight" and "I'm His Only Woman," this American Idol alum and Oscar winning singer has found happiness, success, and love and isn't afraid to share the good news throughout the twelve track effort.

Declaring "Ain't no one gone love you like I'm gonna love you" on the Rich Harrison produced "No One Gonna Love You," Hudson opens the album singing about the fact that her love is second to none in case you forgot. One of several stand outs on "I Remember Me," "No One Gonna Love You" is a solid production heavy on the piano and soul.

Reconnecting with Stargate, Hudson sounds beautiful on "I Got This" (the second track). An empowering song, "I Got This" seems to capture exactly where Hudson is now -- not forgetting where she comes from all the while taking "another step" towards the "top" (this after earning top honors with Grammy and Academy Awards). Despite those accomplishments, R. Kelly and Harvey Mason Jr. aid J-Hud in crafting a song about a man that failed to deliver on his promises leaving her to say "Where You At?". The lead single for this album, "Where You At?" is yet another stand out and one of few ballads. The ending, no ill will intended , is the best part however as Hudson showcases the vocals that make her a powerhouse and undeniable talent.

Perhaps unsurprising, sharing the studio with Alicia Keys proved to be a good bet for Jennifer Hudson on "I Remember Me" -- leading to three songs. The first of the trio, "Angel," finds Hudson singing "I'll be your angel...we can touch the sky". Chanting, "Angel" is an upbeat production just as much as the Keys and Swizz Beatz (Dean) produced "Everybody Needs Love". A throwback to the 70/80s, "Everybody Needs Love" is a feel good record that will make you `scream out' "if you want it, you can get it... just trust and believe love." Even Hudson attests "I know it's a lot of ya'll out there who think you can't find love. But I'm here to tell you, if you want it you can have it -- just believe that". With Salaam Remi, Alicia Keys rounds out the trio giving Hudson another feel good record with "Don't Look Down". "Broken hearts and broken dreams. Baby nothing's broken as it seems," Hudson belts before singing "there is no limit to how high we can go if you don't look down". No doubt, "Don't Look Down" is definitely a song for those falling in love and not out of love.

While you have to love Jennifer Hudson's upbeat nature throughout "I Remember Me," despite telling the absent man in her life "you painted a picture for me but there was no frame" on "Where You At ?" and examining the "pain" and "hurt" on "I Remember Me" (Tedder), you're probably wondering where the signature J-Hud ballad(s) are. Following songs like "You Pulled Me Through" and "If This Isn't Love," Jennifer Hudson delivers on "Still Here". A Diane Warren track, "Still Here" is a strong retrospective ballad featuring Hudson singing "I still see you. I still feel you and we'll never be apart". If nothing else, "Still Here" IS the song you'll want to hear Hudson perform Live!

Speaking of Live!, Jennifer Hudson may draw comparisons to Whitney Houston, affectionately dubbed `The Voice' by many, and she lives up to that on "Why Is It So Hard" (Chuck Harmony, Ne-Yo). Upbeat in comparison to Houston's "Why Does It Hurt So Bad" (Waiting To Exhale, Soundtrack), "Why Is It So Hard" may also remind you of "Blame It On Me" (Chrisette Michele). Nonetheless, it is another emotional and stirring standout on the album with Hudson singing "I guess it's the one time I don't care about the easy way". Alas, nothing is easy considering it would be an understatement to say Jennifer Hudson's life in recent years has not been "easy" but she's truly "Feeling Good" (Newley, Weight Watchers) on "I Remember Me". Declaring "it's a new day" and "freedom is mine," while closing out the album with an inspirational song titled "Believe," it is clear Hudson may just be on track for another visit with Grammy thanks to this album. If you must download, take a listen at "Still Here," "Why Is It So Hard," "Everybody Needs Love," "No One Gonna Love You" and "Don't Look Down". "Where You At?" and "Feeling Good," while previously released, are worth a good listen as well.

Description of I Remember Me

Grammy and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson will release her highly anticipated sophomore album I Remember Me on March 22 on Arista Records. The album's first single, "Where You At," was written and produced by R. Kelly. The album title, I Remember Me, is based on a poem written by Jennifer and composed into a beautiful song co-written by Ryan Tedder that is featured on the album. Additional writers and producers on the album include multi-award winners Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Rich Harrison, Ne-Yo and Stargate.

"I"m excited about this album because it's almost like a renewal for me, reflected through the chapters of my life," comments Jennifer. "I've called it 'I Remember Me' because of the journey I've been on. I've learned that life constantly surprises you, no matter your plans. My fans have been so loyal, I feel like they have been on this journey with me and I can't wait for them to hear the new album."

Clive Davis, Chief Creative Officer, Sony Music Entertainment states: "Jennifer is the voice of the new generation and she literally soars on her second album 'I Remember Me.' Jennifer fulfills all of her promise and all of the prophesies that she will be on that short list of great vocalists of our time."

I Remember Me is the follow up to Jennifer s 2008 eponymous debut album, which featured the hit singles "Spotlight" and "If This Isn t Love." Jennifer Hudson debuted at #2 on Billboard s Top 200 Albums
and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts and won a Grammy in 2009 for Best R&B Album.
