Music Review: Great find, a fresh perspective on the SW classics

This CD (I actually bought the HD flac version from HDtracks) was a very pleasant surprise and deserves so much better than the low ratings on Amazon.com would suggest!
Standing on the shoulders of a giant, Jen Chapin provides a fresh perspective on beloved Stevie Wonder classics in an intimate trio setting. I would like to give Stevie Wonder a lot of credit for the pleasure that I got from this CD: Since the originals are so much present in my mind, listening to this recording creates a fusion between the rich and soulful arrangements as delivered by the master himself and Jen's jazzy reinterpretations. In that sense, the reVisions are surrounded by the halo cast by the originals, if that metaphor helps to illustrate the experience. Without the connection, the musical white space and sometimes minimalistic instrumentation would create a void and appear to be disruptive to the flow of the music. Now, with the rhythm already present and your foot tapping with the music, it swings and flows just as much as you remember from the first time (a long time ago for many of us) you were hit by Mr. Master Blaster.
Having said that, not all tracks work equally well. But then, e.g. Village Ghetto Land - which I don't like from Ms. Chapin's selection - also isn't my favorite tune as sung by SV, so not sure I would have included it here - gratefully it's only 2:52.
This disk is more than just a (welcome!) novelty and rewards repeated listening.
A solid 4 stars from me, given the 0s from customers who are punishing the artist for shipping problems with the CD supplier I am taking the liberty to give it a 5.
