Music Review: Wake-Up Call

I would classify her music as trip-hop-pop, since it is catchy, but has an electronic, artistic quality. Her greatest strengths on this album are the infectious beats she creates so effortlessly and her beautiful, haunting voice, which many will say calls Dido to mind (In my opinion, Jem's voice has more edge than Dido's.).

Here's a rundown of each song on the album...

1. They (5/5). Definitely one of her best songs, filled with choir-like backup vocals and a hypnotic beat. This is probably my favorite song on the album, just because there is nothing like this anywhere else in the music world -- it is a true original!

2. Come on Closer (5/5). Another excellent song. This one has some bell-like background beats, which, when juxtaposed with heavy bass and strings and her slightly seductive tone, becomes a very enjoyable symphony experience.

3. Finally Woken (5/5). I love this song, one that Jem wrote all by herself. It's more chilled out than the first two, down shifting into "tropical paradise" mode, but still, brings on a pulsing rhythm, which produces a hip, beach-infected tune.

4. Save Me (5/5). Jem really lets loose on this song and sings her heart out. You can't help but love the reggae sound that perfectly complements her strong vocals.

5. 24 (5/5). This is a harder song, probably the only song that could come close to being called "rock-n-roll." It could've been out of place on this album, but because Jem does it her way, the song turns out as strong as the previous tracks on the album.

6. Missing You (5/5). This is a moody song, but it's growing on me. It kind of reminds me of a piece that Beth Orton would sing.

7. Wish I (4/5). This is a beautiful song, but not as strong as the previous six.

8. Just a Ride (5/5). I love this song! This is definitely my second favorite on the album. It brings to mind the laid-back music of the Sundays album " ." It is a fun, upbeat song that includes some acoustic singing over hand clapping at the end. What more can I say? It's pure summer fun!

9. Falling For You (5/5). I didn't immediately love this song because it starts out very slow. But, it's growing on me now and I would even say is one of the more interesting tracks on this album. Once you get past the lulling start, the song builds and creates a lush atmosphere.

10. Stay Now (4/5). Again, a good track, just not one of my favorites.

11. Flying High (5/5). This is a beautiful, tender song and Jem sings it perfectly, a song about complex feelings and confusing relationships.

This is a must-have album for 2004, one to which you can sit down and relax because you'll never have to push the "Skip Track" button.
