Music Review: AMAZING SHOWS from the SURREALISTIC PILLOW era
Rating: 5 Stars

After several delays of the release date, we FINALLY have the Jefferson Airplane live material recorded during the same time that SURREALISTIC PILLOW was being recorded. Just reviewing the set lists, shows how close to the finished product of their second album they were. Apparently, JPP McSTEP P BLUES, or Jorma's IN THE MORNING, were much closer to being on the finished album then "HOW DO YOU FEEL?", judging from which songs they performed. These shows have been around for years as bootlegs, at least the Nov 25th show. (the other show commonly bootlegged was Nov. 26th.) The performances given these nights were outstanding, and very close to the sound you hear on SURREALISTIC PILLOW. After this date, lots of SUMMER OF LOVE drugs, fame, and hippie convictions made the band's sound first more experimental (Baxters), then heavier (Crown of Creation), ending in a very hard edged folkrock sound by 1969 (Volunteers). Except for about 40 minutes on their box set, NOTHING has ever been offered by the band offically, from what many consider their best year/period. (NOV.66-FEB 68). It's no secret, that these CDs were being pulled from Bill Graham's tapes, which anyone can hear on his website. However, hearing the Bootleg of the NOV 25th evening show, and comparing it side by side with this new CD's recording, I was STUNNED at how bad this release's sound was. The Bootleg has very little tape hiss, and its in stereo. WE HAVE IGNITION, however, is IN MONO. Also, this is a second generation tape (or 3rd). It could be the Bill Graham tape was sourced from the soundboard, while Jorma ran his own stereo tape recorder from the stage for the evening show. I knew to expect a little lack of quality, but because I wanted the early show, I figured the Bill Graham tapes would be cleaned up by Collectors Choice, and all would be fine. But that tape hiss sounds like it was left alone. The listener is compensated with the less than stelar sound quality by the performances. The two NOV 25th shows are so fantastic, that when the band is in FULL FLIGHT, relatively minor tape hiss doesnt interfer with the enjoyment factor, tho you lose distinction with some sounds. (like hand claps from Marty, or subtle instrumental overtones.) Highlights of NOV 25th include the JPP McSTEP P BLUES number, and IN THE MORNING, and the rare DCBA-25. (The stereo bootleg of the evening show starts at "3/5ths of a MILE"--so the afternoon show isnt available in stereo anyway.) Altho you sacrifice sound quality, you do get almost complete performances from 11/25's afternoon and evening shows. (SOMEBODY TO LOVE was cut off the finale of the evening show, and the afternoon show's PLASTIC FANTASTIC LOVER is incomplete.) All in all, this CD set might deserve a four star rating based on the B+ sound quality, except the shows are SO IMPORTANT historically. This performance shows us Jefferson Airplane live, right at their SURREALISTIC PILLOW peak. For that reason alone, this live release becomes indispensible to fans of the PILLOW. However, the second CD (NOV 27) has what must be the worst sound quality on ANY offically released Jefferson Airplane live album I've heard. Even worse than those MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL recordings that float around.

The second CD from WE HAVE IGNITION (NOV 27th) has a MONO sonic quality of around C+/B-, due to an overall hissy, foggy soundscape, and with drums nearly mixed out. (You can hear the drums best on SHE HAS FUNNY CARS, but that song was their loudest rock song at the time, so that's to be expected. The quieter songs, have the drums very muted.) Marty's mic is too loud, making his tambourine about twice as loud as the drum kit. Grace is balanced for the most part, but the guitars are poorly mixed, and the bass lacks sonic clarity. Nevertheless, there remain inventive, strong performances on the Second disc, making it a nice addition to the package. The second CD's version of TODAY mixes a very plantive, keening vocal performances by Marty, with lovely harmony by Grace. This is why to this day Marty and Grace's vocals are legendary for merging harmonies with utmost perfection. There's not a sour note in that WHOLE song's performance. (And Grace is singing some odd, difficult harmonies.) "MY GRANDFATHER"S CLOCK" is a song in the same way "TURN OUT THE LIGHTS" is a song from BLESS ITS POINTED LITTLE HEAD. Basically about one minute of Jorma playing a guitar piece, with Jack accompanying him on bass. Very lightly Paul can be heard fumbling around on guitar, with maybe hi hat splashes at one point, and no vocals. Half of the two minute length, is blank tape left running before the last number begins. The OTHER SIDE OF THIS LIFE by Fred Neil concludes disc two. This song's performance merits praise, but by this point, almost EVERY performance of The OTHER SIDE OF THIS LIFE became an extended excursion into acidwonderland.

Overall its hard to judge this release. If I didnt know the quality of the bootleg sound circulating of the 11/25 evening show found on Disc ONE, I wouldnt be too disappointed by what i hear at all. After all, we're talking about recordings made 45 years ago. Disc Two is more difficult to listen to, due to sonic constrictions of the source tape, but considering the price of this 2CD set, I consider it a freebie. Basically, what this release provides you with, is a LIVE VERSION OF SURREALISTIC PILLOW, minus "Somebody to love" and a couple of other songs, you probibly have in live versions anyway. ITs not too far fetched to consider many of these songs LIVE DEMOS for Surrealistic Pillow. For that reason alone, if you are a fan of JA's second album, you REALLY should buy this 2CD set. Also, since the price is very reasonable for a 2CD set, you don't need to feel cheated by the relatively poor sound quality of the second CD. The packaging is well done, and there's even a little essay hidden behind the second CD, telling you how great the performances are on this set, in case you need reminding. Of the four Jefferson Airplane Live releases Collectors Choice just provided the fan base, THIS IS THE CD SET TO BUY. (Even if you are buying it just for the live version of DCBA-25.)
