Music Reviews of Live at Jittery Joe'sMusic Review: this is a beautiful record Rating: 5 Stars
It has the intimate, immediate feel of a bootleg, Plus it has special treats I hadn't previously heard, like the song "Engine" which makes me feel like a baby again. I kind of like the baby, you don't hear it too much, and all i want to do is be that little kid with Jeff Mangum singing to me. And for the audience out of diapers, you get more of his haunting, phenomenal presence than you'll ever find in a studio recording, in my humble opinion.
Music Review: More Precious than Schubert Rating: 3 Stars
Schubert once screamed at some fellow composers that they were unfit to scrape the worms from the bottom of his boots. I think if one could read Jeff Mangum's mind, he would be thinking aloing similar lines. The stage banter on this coffee-house live record supports this view. He seems like a truly annoying man. The songs are good, but there is a baby crying throughout much of the album which, coupled with mangum's approach, make cd pretty average.
Music Review: Mangum's Voice is One of a Kind Rating: 5 Stars
I loved Aeroplane Over the Sea and some of Avery Island, but this album is just great. Just his voice, a guitar, and some background sounds. Great Phil Spector song. I wish there was more Neutral Milk Hotel out there.
Music Review: Jeff Mangum is a wicked, wicked boy Rating: 5 Stars
This is what he wanted, and this is what he achieved. Genius, pure genius. He knew when to say when...
