It was a pleasure to listen through the great collection of this box. Since I grew up with this orchestra almost in my neighboring block in Amsterdam, and countless visits to concerts, and now living at the Westcoast of the U.S., I just was transported back into that marvellous Concertgebouw home again. These are live performances recorded by the specialists of the Dutch radio and they sound great. No, not like the almost sterile and close to perfect sounding studio recordings made with lots and lots of mikes, but these performances have the feel and the sound of how a visitor in the hall hears it. One can really hear and feel that special sound color of hall and orchestra. A perfect marriage indeed. In several works in this box we can hear the top notch first desk musicians of the orchestra of that time play as soloists. For instance in the Brahms double concerto. The full blooded musicianship of these excellent musicians (many still from the time when the great Mengelberg was there) is heart warming and a delight to listen to. In this piece we hear Tibor de Machula, cello, playing his heart out. Another wonderful performance in this box is the youth work by Mahler - Das Klagende Lied. An absolutely stunning performance by Haitink with Proctor, Hanneke ten Bork en Ernst Haefliger. Haitink made several recordings of it with other soloists, all fine but nothing like this one! There is a beauty and a tension that goes with the music as the story unfolds that I have never heard as good as here; gorgeous singing and orchestral sound. There is much, much more wonderful music on all the cd's and, I should not forget to mention the applause with each work. It completes the musical experience and when one knows how the Amsterdam audience measures and gives its appreciation with measure.... it addes greatly to the richness of this and the other boxes.
Fine sound and highly recommended.
