Music reviews of Shura Cherkassky plays Rameau, Haydn, Chopin, Liszt, Hindemith & Berkeley

Music Review: A memorable sample of the one and only Cherkassky
Rating: 4 Stars

For five decades after he moved to Britain in 1946, the charming Shura Cherkassky was the absolute darling of the London recital stage. A gushing Gramophone reviewer recaptures "memories of the elfin figure tripping daintily on to the platform, his head turning almost purple with fierce concentration in the opening minutes, the teasing, the charming.. .they don't make them like him any more." Like a kindred spirit, Stokowski, Cherkassky managed to arouse huge popularity while maintaining a high level of musical accomplishment. In both cases there were vulgar lapses, but also a great deal of joy -- that's what we sorely miss today, far more than the Hollywood persona. (born in Odessa in 1090, cherkassky moved to the U.S. as a boy and later appeared at the Hollywood Bowl as well as on movie soundtracks.)

This live recital from 1993, when the pianist was 84, displays undiminished energy and enthusiasm. One of Cherkassky's trademarks was to build his programs out of bite-sized morsels, and here we get no less than eleven works, including a big encore, the Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2, offered as a savory after a menu that went from Rameau and Haydn to Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Lenox Berkeley. Few would dare to try that today, but he knew his audience and how to charm them. By the end of his long life as a performer -- the pianist died in 1995, two years after tis appearance -- Cherkassky was being held up as the last of the Romantic virtuosos in the lineage of Liszt, Godowsky, Horowitz, et al. but he's not aristocratic or commanding. There's something quite approachable about his playing. Perhaps you had to be there, because in terms of musicality per se, I don't hear much that is distinctive. Bu the style, if uniform, is direct and generous. Those who know Cherkassky's discography better than I say that his recital captures him better than most, which will be recommendation enough for his fans and an enticement to newcomers who want to know what all the fuss was about.

Here's the rather amazing program:

Six Preludes for Piano, Op. 23, No. 5

Polka, Op. 5
