Music Review: Lives Up To Its Title

4 years after "Jewel Of Hari" and 2 years after her band One At Last's "Are You Dreaming", Jaya Lakshmi returns with "Sublime", which indeed lives up to its title. It's not as initially as catchy as her previous albums, but as some of the other reviewers have mentioned, repeat listening is required to get hooked. It's also generally more lush and mellow - a transition between the uptempo and energetic sounds of "Jewel Of Hari" and the serene and gentle sounds of her latest album "Radiance". The sound is very layered with many textures. Standout tracks are: Brahma Shanti, Shiva Shankara, Jai Ma and Sri Vrndavan (which is a re-recording of a track from the 2nd Lost At Last album which had a techno beat, a heavier sarod sound, a spoken-word passage and Lakshmi singing in the style she had before "Jewel of Hari". If you get a chance, listen to the differences between both versions.) The 2 bonus MP3 tracks which are faster and uptempo dance versions of "Radhe Shymasundari" and "Jai Ma" are awesome; the bonus videos "Nataraj" and "Jai Ambe", recorded from one of her live, stripped-down, acoustic Kirtans is a wonderful treat. The fact that she is as comfortable performing on a dance floor as well as at a sacred temple shows what a wonderfully diverse artist she is.
