Music reviews of The Blueprint 3 [Clean]Music Review: Hova's Back!!! Rating: 5 Stars
Jay-Z is a veteran in the rap game, he has been rappin since the late 80's and has impacted it since 1996 with his debut classic album "Reasonable Doubt" which got rave reviews. He than put himself in history with his Diamond selling album "Life & Times of S. Carter vol.2" and mega hit single "Hard Knock Life" which gone to win Jay-Z's 1st grammy award. September 11, 2001 needless to say was a devastating day in U.S. history, however even that couldn't stop Jay-Z from selling one of the most crafted Hip Hop albums ever created known as "The Bluprint". The Blueprint album was known as one of very few albums that cover all aspects of Hip Hop which are money, girls, battle records, respect, swagger, representing for ones city and life itself, now it may sound like the perfect album but it still has flaws, but its is probably Jay-Z's most complete record. After that album, Blueprint 2 came out and it didn't live up to expectations to the first, the album was a two disc compilation of Jay experimenting all over over the place with a variety of different producers and artists. He would den come out with "The Black Album" which is Jay-Z's last comepleter modern classic album. 2006 was his comeback year from a 2 year hiatus with 2 more albums "Kingdom Come" and "American Gangster" which were mediocre at best.
The year is 2009 and Hip Hop is in a bad place at the moment, this is a time where Hip Hop music is defined by the music killing "Auto-Tune" Lil Wayne all over the place, and a never ending trend of ridiculous BS dance songs. However some rappers are coming back to help rejuvinate the rap scene such as Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx pt. 2" Kid Cudi's attempt to broaden Hip Hops creativity with his inspiring album "Man on the Moon: The End of Day" and 2 of Hip Hop's most anticipated albums which are Lupe Fiasco's "Lasers" and a long awaited "Detox" album from Dr. Dre. Jay-Z feels it is his time to come back once again to tell all the fake wannabe's what real music is. The Blueprint 3 is an album very different from his previous, it is experimental but at the same time Jay-Z feels very comfortable when spittin on the mic. This album is polished as can be and very well thought out, although there are some filler tracks, the ones that aren't shine as bright as the sun and give you a sense of relief that Hip Hop has a chance of coming back to being a legitiment substance filled genre of music again/
1) What Ww Talkin About feat. Luke Steele - a strong produced open track. Jay comes in strong with his verses and the hook will literally get you hooked. The production is a lil wierd at first but this is the overall essential sound of the album so if you don't like it than you will not like the album. 9/10
2) Thank You - an ode to all of his hardcore fans that stuck with him. The beat is a problem, Kanye West written all over it. As soon as it starts you will start bumpin your head at an instance. 10/10
3) D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) - the 1st single off the album and definitely a boycott to the horrible auto-tune users. Jay-Z goes hard on this joint and gives a message to all those posers in the rap game, he is the first rapper to rewrite a history without a pen and a new start starts right now so let the story begin. 10/10
4) Run This Town feat. Rihanna & Kanye West - this is the masterpiece of the album. The beat is so catchy and raw that you will start felling it in your bones. Rihanna's touch to the song is the main reason why the song works so well, you couldn't imagine a better fit singer to go with this song. Jay-Z is starting a movement and we're all just buckled in ready for the ride. Kanye's verse is the best I've heard from him in a long while. This is the best song on the album PERIOD. 10/10
5) Empire State of Mind feat. Alicia Keys - I'm predicitng this the next and 3rd single off the album. When I heard that Alicia was collaborating with Jay, the thought came to mind "Epic". But when I heard it, I was expecting something a lil bit more different. The song doesn't grasp you right a way but the delivery from these two is exactly what you expect. The song is a soulful jam that will become an anthem in the future. 9.5/10
6) Real as It Gets feat. Young Jeezy - first off, I HATE young Jeezy. Honestly he is one of many reasons why I hate rap music today. Jeezy cannot rap, I mean I'm just being a hater but his delivery is something you will not remember a few years from now. The beat is nice and Jay-Z is ok but this song gets repetitive. 7.5/10
7) On to The Next One feat. Swizz Beatz - this is a filler track. Swizz Beatz production sucks and Jay barely saves it. 6/10
8) Off That feat. Drake - now I'm a lil dissapointed in Jay-Z for this one. For those who don't know, Drake is supposedly the new rap phenomenon that is compared to being the next big thing. The hype around Drake is very overrated, he is Pop music and his fame will be often compared to Lil Wayne, which is actually an insult if you ask me. Timbaland produced this if I remember and it is a club record obviously. Jay-Z only chose Drake to be on the album because of his popularity at the moment. The song is average, Jigga is OK and Drake is horrendous. 7/10
9) A Star Is Born feat. J.Cole - okay so if you thought the Blueprint 3 was going to be an average album because of the 3 previous track, no worries, Jay is back on track with this song. The production is spectacular and Jay-Z's lyrics are incredible on this song. J.Cole is a upcoming artist and this song will put him on the map, his hook on the song is heartwarming and awesome. 10/10
10) Venus vs. Mars - This song is an experimental track produced by Timbaland, the overall sound is full of funky sounding synthesizers and popping sounds. The story of the song is still a bit fuzzy to me cuz I'm still tryna figure it out, but its interesting its obviously about man and woman against each other or together or sumthin like that. The song is a bit boring but the beat will keep you hooked. 8/10
11) Already Home feat. Kid Cudi - I luv this track. This is the old Kanye West production that I've missed soooooooo much. Kid Cudi is another newcomer in the game but he is very refreshing unlike Drake. The song is great and headrockin'. Kid Cudi does well on the hook and Jay-Z delivers well. 9/10
12) Hate feat. Kanye West - this is another filler track, this song is very reminicent of Kanye's album "Graduation" with Kanye experimenting with his proudction. The lyrics are a lil bit obnoxious and you will tell right away when Kanye West raps the line "I am never sprung but I Springer, Jerry". It is a very catchy song and a standout from the rest of the album but the song's message and delivery isn;t very great. 7/10
13) Reminder - This song has one of the sicekest beats I have ever heard from Timbaland. This song is like "The Rulers Back" from Jay-Z' s 1st blueprint album. He reminds all the listeners that he is still a great contender in the rap game and he is nothing to mess with. 9/10
14) So Ambitious feat. Pharrell - I honestly don't like Pharrell as an artists or his productions, all his stuff sounds terribly similar, his style never changed ever since I've heard him when I was 10. This song is OK i guess, the message is well said and Pharrell doesn't comepletely ruin the song. 8/10
15) Young Forever feat. Mr Hudson - a very fitting way to end the album. A strong sounding song that basically says that he will never sellout and will always remain the way he is standing the test of time. The beat is epic and Mr Hudson adds his own touch to the song. Great song to end a great album. 10/10
While The Blueprint 3 won't be the classic that Jay-Z himself may claims it to be, it is a great album that I can proudly put on my top 5 albums of 2009 and one of Jay-Z's best albums since "The Black Album" that came out 5 years ago. Buy the album it isn't perfect but it is awesome.
