Music reviews of Watch the Throne

Music Review: Kanye West and Jay-Z team up to prove to the world that rap is not dead (and that they're homeboys)
Rating: 4 Stars

Holla, everybody! Uh...uh...yeah. This CD that represents a masterful collaboration between that awesome rapper Kanye and Jay-Z should be declared the CD of the decade. I know...I know that I'm being a tiny, little bit presumptuous by saying dat, but even though we're only in 2011...I can already foresee that no other force in American music will be able to top this sweet, homeboy partnership of Kanye and Jay-Z!

Me, I've been a long, long-time fan of both Jay-Z and Kanye: I have loved Jay-Z's music long before he released that original and groundbreaking song called Hard Knock Life from some 10 years ago, and I have been a hardcore fan of Kanye's long before he began to steal the microphone and specific awards from white teen girls who sing country music-pop at awards shows!!! Holla, y'all! Uh...uh.

On Watch the Throne, I am immediately drawn to the awesome, urban collaboration between Kanye and Jay-Z that reminds me of all the awesomenezzes of true homeboy and ghetto coolness. Why, just take the first track called No Church in the Wild. When I turned this song up on my ghetto blaster and went out cruising in my low rider with my own homeboys, I was instantly captivated by Kanye's gangsta-rap style and his sick and ill rhymes, while Jay-Z's sweet, soulful crooning and Barry White-style, baritone melodies kept me coming back for more and more.

I also, like, totally adore how full of surprises Watch the Throne is, yo. For example, on track two, which is called Lift Off, there appears, though I'm not entirely sure, a beautiful, sultry-sounding female's voice that really knows how to get me off. I think the guest singer is either Anne Murray, Amy Winehouse (probably doing her last and final guest spot, which means it's good they got her before she...you know), or just one of the totally talented teen girls from the Glee TV show. Whoever it really is, I think we can all agree that she is totally ill and da bomb, just like all the tracks on Watch the Throne, ese.

I feel that Ni* gas in Paradise and That's my Beyotch are the two stand-out tracks by far on this sweet, ghetto, homeboy collaboration of an album. Both of those tracks just speeks to me in a fashion that is really very articulate, literate and indicative of very, very high breeding. I also feel both of those tracks correctly sum up the way that many blacks feel living in the US under President Obama, which is clearly full of resentment at him for betraying them and siding with the Anglos and Hispanics. I think I remember reading somewhere, some time ago, that both Kanye and Jay-Z intended some form of political commentary on those two songs. They surely succeeded--holla!

Last but not least, I am totally, totally, just totally offended at the overuse of the "explicit" "warnings" on each and every track here! I mean, do white people's CDs have this many "warnings" on them? I think not!!! C'mon, this is smelling like a prejudiced conspiracy in my mind. I find said warnings misleading because on all tracks, I could find no real, offensive swear words--only the usual, slightly colorful language like sh *t, f* ck and as* h*le, but nothing really upsetting.

Description of Watch the Throne

For this project, music icons and pop culture visionaries JAY-Z and Kanye West have joined their extraordinary talents to form the group `THE THRONE' and confirm the most anticipated album and touring event of the year, WATCH THE THRONE. The longtime friends and music innovators inspired each other to new heights with their collaboration on WATCH THE THRONE recorded in person at various locations around the world. Over a year in the making and a truly global affair, the duo recorded in London and Bath in the UK, Abu Dhabi, Sydney, Paris, and New York City. Though shrouded in secrecy, the album has already been heralded a `masterpiece' by those who have heard it, and features production from The RZA, The Neptunes and Kanye's longtime collaborator Mike Dean. The short list of featured vocals includes Frank Ocean, Beyoncé, Curtis Mayfield and Mr. Hudson. The lead track, "OTIS," which premiered over New York radio waves on Wednesday, July 20th night during HOT 97's FunkMaster Flex show, brilliantly weaves Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness."

The production is classic Kanye West soul, with the two MCs trading couplets over a sample manipulated the way only West can. `Sounds so soulful, don't you agree?" intones JAY-Z, and the two launch into a treatise on swagger, claiming their rightful place at the top. Since the track's release, the flood of praise for the track has been nothing short of deafening. Entertainment Weekly declares the track "the most well-executed rap song of the year

Both JAY-Z and Kanye West have each appeared as guests on the other's stage, and now they come together for never-before-seen performances not only from their collaboration, WATCH THE THRONE but also songs from their classic catalogue. Fans should stay tuned: several key dates will offer unique opportunities to become a part of the WATCH THE THRONE movement.
