Music Review: The First "Hootie"

Long before Hootie & The Blowfish appeared on the scene in 1994 another Hootie was thrilling audiences with his blend of boogie woogie jump tunes, jazz, and pure blues. Jay McShann, born in 1916 in Muskogee, Oklahoma was rightly regarded as one of the living legends by Peter Silvester in his book In A Left Hand Like God - right up there with the likes of Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, and Meade Lux Lewis.

Jay had his first hit single in 1943 when Get Me On Your Mind reached # 7 for the Decca label on what then passed for the R&B charts. Bllled to Jay McShann & His Orchestra with vocal by Al Hibbler, the flipside was The Jumpin' Blues, and both are included here.

So too is his next hit, which didn't come until early 1949 when he was recording as Jay McShann and The Band That Jumps The Blues. Released by Down Beat, Hot Biscuits made it to # 9 R&B and while that is also included here, the B-side, Slow Drag Blues, is not. They do, however, include Parts 1 and 2 of Ain't Nobody's Business, his collaboration with Jimmy Witherspoon which peaked at # 1 R&B in May 1949 for the Supreme label and stayed on those charts for an incredible 34 weeks.

Later that summer they also paired up for In The Evening which topped out at # 5 R&B, but this is not included, nor are McShann's only other two hits: Buttermilk [# 15 R&B in April 1949 for Down Beat] and Hands Off, a # 1 R&B for three weeks in 1955 for the Vee-Jay label, with vocal by Priscilla Bowman.

I find it hard to believe that this set is being offered at such a ridiculously low price. If you want to experience some of the best sides of this legend, who passed away in December 2006, I suggest you grab one while they last. In 1988 Jay was inducted into the Blues Hall Of Fame. Why they still neglect him in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is beyond me.
