Music reviews of Pan's Labyrinth

Music Review: Beautiful in a way that makes you scared of the dark
Rating: 5 Stars

Can I assume anyone reading this has seen the movie? I'm not writing a review of the movie, but it's important to know where this music is coming from, because it was an integral part of the storytelling. Ofelia is a young girl still able to move fluidly between the frightening reality of Spain at wartime and the equally frightening world of her imagination. She lives among merciless soldiers and enemy spies, but, as she's told by a decrepit faun that is far from nurturing, she's also the long-departed princess of a magic land. The film is gruesome - among the moments that I could not watch: a farmer's nose being beaten into his brain, the torture of a captured rebel that leaves him with fingers that, if there were any justice in the world, should not still be able to function, and the cutting / sewing of a huge slash to the commander's mouth. Ew, ew, and ew!

What I'm trying to say is that this is a fairy tale as gruesome as gruesome (perhaps more) than those like Cinderella before being watered down to be made suitable for small children. Here, the "happy ending" comes at a price that most storytellers are unwilling to pay. The music, fittingly, is violent, scary, dreamlike, and sad. You get the sense in some tracks that the writer is trying very hard to back off and allow the movie to happen, which is the way it has to be, I guess, but in other tracks the music completely takes over. I listen to it as I ride on the subway every now and then and I become very anxious, not because I think the people around me are dangerous, but because, amidst the solidness of my surroundings, I'm swept back into the world I vacated as my childhood ended, where magic is floating just beyond the bright lights of reality. I don't know what your magical lands resembled in your youth, but mine were very alive and equally frightening and they made the dark reality of the world less so. When I want to feel upbeat I'll listen to Disney music. This soundtrack succeeds in capturing a far different atmosphere - one of a rich, emotional, ever-changing world constructed entirely of imagination and the creatures hidden in our subconscious. If I want to remember the time when magic made me feel both awe and terror, I'll listen to this.

NOTE: You really don't have to take my word for it - the entire soundtrack plays in the background as you browse the film's official website. I'm not saying this is an alternative to buying the CD, but you can definitely get an idea of what it sounds like.

Description of Pan's Labyrinth

Sountrack to director Guillermo del Toro's 2006 horror/fantasy film starring Ivana Baquero.
Too many soundtracks feel interchangeable, and rare are the composers who really capture a movie's core. But Javier Navarrete has succeeded in his Oscar-nominated score for Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, a dark fantasy set in 1944 Spain. The first cue, "Long, Long Time Ago," sets the melancholy tone with piano and voice; the spectral piano pops up several more times, and the theme is more fully developed in "Mercedes Lullaby." But it's the second track, the aptly titled "The Labyrinth," that really gives the listener insight into the movie's tenebrous universe. While Navarrete can certainly do short, intimate pieces dotted with telling arrangements (like the few trumpet notes adding a subtle Spanish flavor to "Rose, Dragon"), he excels on the longer tracks, such as "Not Human," which goes through a succession of moods, each one increasingly scary, without ever going overboard into cheap, demonstrative effects. Navarrete has already had a long career as a film scorer in Spain, and this won't be the last American audiences hear from him. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
