Music reviews of Waiting for My Rocket to Come

Music Review: Shows a lot of future potential, and lots of talent right now
Rating: 5 Stars

A lot of reviewers on here seem to like to complain about Jason Mraz being too poppy. I can understand that because my favorite songs on "Waiting for my Rocket to Come", are mostly the less poppy songs. However, I'm not going to mark him down for that, because poppy or not, Mraz has made an album that is not only listenable, but has some shelf life (right now its October 20, 2010, but this is my original review). :D

For me, personally, the only songs I really liked on this disc at first were the singles: You and I both, The Remedy, and Curbside Prophet. I also really liked "I'll do anything", which is another poppy one. On repeated listenings I found that I liked a lot more songs. When I first listened to the album I was thinking "And I bought this junk!!! HA! What a sucker!!!". Its just an album that takes getting used, but I find the best album's are usually the ones that don't yield instant gratification on more than a couple of tracks, but I soon found that each new listen holds new treaures.

Although portions of this album are fairly poppy, the other tracks are a lot more silly or introspective, and while enjoyable, I can't imagine ANY of them really being huge hits (and time showed that "The Remedy" was the only major hit off of this album). I think Mraz is VERY sincere in what he does, while her clearly has roots in pop, it does not seem as though his soul purpose of recording the record was to get a hit (though I am sure that was plus). He seems to have the sincerity and talent to become a truely great songwriter once he really hones his skills.

Out of all of the tracks, after the sugar rush of the singles wore off, I really began to enjoy "Sleep All Day". I am not entirely certain why there's just something about this song that strikes a chord with me, I love it, maybe its because this and a few other Mraz songs were what I listened to while reading "Boys over Flowers(Hana Yori Dango)".

Although at first I hardily disliked "Absolutely Zero" for a long time, it just seemed like an extremely dull song despite what all the other reviews seemed to be saying it was an amazing song. I was thinking either "Something is wrong with my ears or their's". Now, however, this is probably my favorite song on here. I listened to this on repeat as well with "Sleep All Day" when reading Boys Over Flowers.

I do like the other tracks as well, in my opinion there is NOT a bad track on the disc, their all at least well-performed (with a lot of spirit) and decently written songs, though they may not seem so on first listen.

I do really enjoy the quirky lyrics on such tracks as "Too Much Food", "The Remedy", and "Curbside Prophet". I hope Mraz learns to nurture his talent with quirky lyrics and emotional sincerity, he will become an amazing artist if he does, because he has a unique voice, and I think if he can continue gorwing musically and artistically this album will be mediocre by comparison.

In summary get this album if you want something fun that is fun and quirky, but also a bit pensive and more down beat in other places.

God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

Description of Waiting for My Rocket to Come

His debut album is packed with witty, wordy, smart, funky & astonishingly catchy pop songs that do right by the best singer-songwriter traditions of Elektra. 2002.
Virginia exile Jason Mraz grew up listening to Dave Matthews and Agents of Good Roots, local heroes whose frat-friendly influences are much in evidence on his major-label debut. Producer John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer) augments Mraz's SoCal cohorts with Agents' rhythm section, dramatically expanding and polishing songs like "Curbside Prophet" and "You and I Both," which previously appeared in looser, less developed versions on Mraz's self-released live recordings. But fans from the singer-songwriter's coffeehouse years need not despair. Mraz's witty lyrics and easygoing folk-blues stylings (think Jack Johnson on Prozac) are still very much in evidence. He's also in fine voice and, on two standout tracks--"Who Needs Shelter" and "Absolutely Zero"--rivals Neil Finn in his ability to invoke the spirit of Paul McCartney. Waiting for My Rocket to Come showcases an artist who, while still finding his own direction, is clearly off to a great start. --Bill Forman
