Music reviews of Mr. A-Z

Music Review: Not what I was hoping for but still good
Rating: 4 Stars

after reading the more recent reveiws im wondering if we are all listening to the same album? i love jason mraz just as much as the next person but lets be honest here, this album cant touch the greatness of his first. are you all blinding yourself with the fact that you like him as a person that you cant judge his work objectively?

the opening track "life is wonderful" is, well, wonderful. it puts the theory of fate and everything happening for a reason into smooth lyrics. though i feel an album should open with a bang, this song seems to flutter more than bang. key lyric: "it takes no time to fall in love/but it takes years to know what love is"

the first single "wordplay" is a catchy single. thats it. every commercial album has that song on it that is purely the catchy first single that draws people in to buy the whole album. thats what this is. a good song, but still just that token catchy single. key lyric: "we need a new song/like a new religion"

"Geek in the Pink" is jason mraz's attempt to show his range by throwing in some hip hop vibes. lucky for him it's a success. its another catchy single that will most definetely be loved by the airwaves. this catchy single has one up on "wordplay", hip hop is in right now and this single is likely to reach a larger audience because of that. not making this song his next single is just plain stupid.

"Did You Get My Message" brings back the quirky humor we all fell in love with on "Waiting for my Rocket to Come". again just another catchy song. this song begs to be a single but shouldnt be for the simple fact that you only put out 3 to 4 singles and you dont want to waste 3 slots on up beat catchy songs, you need a little depth in there and probably a ballad.

"Mr. Curiousity" could very likely be that ballad. Its a beautiful love song that edges on weepy. it is a sign of his raw emotion that just doesnt come out right. he's reaching high for the greatness of a john mayer ballad, the effort is comendable but he stumbles along the way leaving you with a song that borders on being hard to listen to.

"Clockwatching" is the first real gem of the album. the music alone begs to be listened to on repeat, then you add in the lyrics that are the pure definition of the joy of being in love. in my eyes this is a song so wonderful it would be wrong to keep it hidden from the masses. as a single it is a risk that should be taken. key lyric: "Lady/dreamer/you maybe the soundest sleeper/tonight/sleep tight/and build your nest upon my shoulder"

When talking about "Bella Luna" i feel slightly repeditive. he goes and takes a risk, as he did with "Geek in the Pink", by going for a latin vibe but where he successed so well in "Geek in the Pink" here he fails. he again reaches for great depth, as he did in "Mr. Curiosity", and not only stumbles but trips and goes down a bottomless pit, not with out a fight i may add. the product is music that repeats the same unmoveing melody and just doesnt fit with the lyrics.

"Plane" is just depressing. i cant imagine wanting to listen to a song about a plane crash, but i do. something about this song works. you listen as if you want to make yourself cry and feel the pain of a plane crashing. he does not achieve the dramatic depth that indie singer/songwriters, such as Conor Oberst, achieve with their morbid thoughts but he does well for a first try. where he fails is sadly with his lyrics. he croons "if the plane goes down/damn", for some reason that description seems incredibly inadequet.

"O. Lover" takes over where "Bella Luna" ended. the songs should have been put at the end so they would be easier to skip over. "O. Lover" does slightly better with the latin vibe than "Bella Luna". he goes back to the up beat quirkiness he does so well which makes this song listenable. this song has the potential to be one of those songs that just grows on you.

"Please Don't Tell Her" i place right up there with "Clockwatching". An odd little song that you find yourself singing along to before you even realized you knew all the words. Its the kind of song most artists dream of, a catchy single worthy song that goes beyound catchy and actually has meaning that lingers even after the music has stopped. Adding this song to my chosen list of singles, "Geek in the Pink" followed by "Clockwatching", would really pull people into thinking this album is a lot better than it actually is.

The first thing "The Forecast" made me think of was The Sims. you have to admit that first opening melody sounds a lot like the music that comes through your speakers when you are off buying a bed for you sim. Consider the title of the song, this the sims/weather channel melody blends well. this would lead you to think this is a bad song, but it isnt. it deserves to be on the album just as much as "Bella Luna" deserves to be taken off. it isnt mind blowing but its what i would call a filler, a nice song slide inbetween those truely maginificent once. only in this case they use what should be a filler as one of those great songs. not usually a good sign.

"Song for a Friend" begs for you to love it just in the title. i wanted to love this song, i really did, i just couldnt. it does not deserve my love. it is so lengthy. it makes good background music but its nothing you really want to concentrate on. as it fades away you think well that was a nice song but then it blasts back at you with a gospel like choir that i always feel like is preaching something to me. when im paying attention i find it helps a lot to just skip back to "life is wonderful" or stop it completely once it has started to fade. honestly, i really did want to love this song but the music just doesnt live up to the potential of the song title.

all and all it was not a FATANSTIC, OH MY GOD GO OUT AND BUY IT NOW, NOW, NOW!!! album, but it was still good. to first time listeners of jason mraz i would suggest his other albums first. only a true fan can completely embrace this album for all its faults, and there are quite a few.

Description of Mr. A-Z

Jason Mraz presents his latest offering and his second studio album-Mr. A-Z. Produced by the legendary Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, et al) at Allaire Studios near Woodstock, NY, Mr. A-Z is Mraz's most inspired and thoughtful record to date.
Jason Mraz's breakthrough 2002 hit, "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" established him as a funnier, funkier version of John Mayer, custom-built for The O.C. set. On Mr. A-Z, the Virginia singer-songwriter continues mixing up folk melodies and hip-hop beats. He also keeps making heroic stabs at humor that would have gone down like a storm in his coffeehouse days but typically backfire on record. Fortunately, producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Gabriel) is on hand to clean things up, giving even the most bumbling lyrical experiments, such as "Wordplay" and "Geek in the Pink," at least the illusion of a newfound maturity. --Aidin Vaziri
