Music Review: Near Speechless

I'm a bit embarrased to admit I hadn't ever heard of Jann Arden until I picked up Blood Red Cherry about a year ago in the public library. It was unlike anything I'd heard in years, the audial equivalent of manna in the desert for me. After that I tried to find more in record stores, almost obsolete these days, I searched most of the Texas library system online, at the library. I'm not going to repeat the tremendous reviews already posted, I think they're all pretty much spot-on. I've been able to aquire "Happy" and "Living Under June" recently, dealing through Amazon.com. Money well spent. I can't recommend these albums highly enough. With the exception of the Beatles I can't name any other artist that holds my interest with every song on every CD. There is no way I could name a favorite CD among them, I suspect Blood Red Cherry is more diverse, but certainly not better than the others. I can't imagine how she escaped my attention all this time, a mistake I hope not to repeat. Okay, I realize this isn't the song-by-song evaluation usually posted, it wasn't meant to be. Just the blood and guts heartfelt response, a validation of what's already been posted so eloquently prior to my posting. Speed metal fans, this isn't for you. These songs are as lyrically complex as a lot of Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan songs. Her vocal timing and articulation are flawless, her voice expressive, delicate, demanding, everything it should be in the context intended.
The instrumental accompaniment should recompense any perceived flaws. It's like the old pick a card, any card. Choose a song, any song as randomly as you'd like from any of the three afore mentioned albums. Just give it a try. You can thank me later
