Music Review: Lovely and different

This album has ten Christmas carols sung in ten different Indian languages. I hadn't encountered Jana before, but she has a lovely voice, and she is backed by tasteful instrumental arrangements. This album is Christmasy, yet something different and pleasing.
The slight downside is the typical problem of music in translation. Songs generally reflect the structure of the language in which they are written. The translations of these songs into Indian languages sometimes leads to the lyrics not quite fitting with the melodic structure. Taking the first two tracks as an example, the Navajo lyrics for "O Holy Night" work pretty well, but the phonetic structure of the Kalispel Salish lyrics don't, to my ear, mesh smoothly with the melody of "O Come All Ye Faithful". All in all, however, it is a tribute to the translators and to Jana's vocal dexterity that the album generally works very well.
Whatever its minor faults, I have this album loaded into my car's CD player, and I'll be listening to it during my Christmas drives. Certainly some lovely music here.
