Music reviews of October Road by James Taylor

Music Review: Like an old friend, James Taylor brings reliability to music
Rating: 5 Stars

With some musical artists, the old saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt. Critics and the general listening audience - myself included - will be harsh on a singer if his or her musical stylings don't change or don't venture into experiments with new sounds. With others, though, familiarity is a good thing. The prime example of this is James Taylor. He is one of the rare musicians who can keep basically with the same formula and still be (deservedly so) hailed for the finished product.

That isn't to say that Mr. Taylor doesn't experiment a little. There is evidence of experimentation and new sounds on "October Road", but he manages to restrain and blend them into his trademark musical stylings, rather than venturing so far out that he alienates his core audience and ruins his musical integrity. Here, he ventures into some jazz and blues - which he has done with success on previous albums - and even incorporates Celtic sounds on a poignant track called "Belfast To Boston".

But it is that familiar acoustic guitar and soothing vocals that makes "October Road" another special listening experience. From the opening chords on the first track ("September Grass") all the way through the touching "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", all the elements of excellent musicianship and strong, catchy lyrics envelop the listener with a warmth and enjoyment found rarely in contemporary music. There is nothing jarring or disturbing about any song on the disc, so it is perfect for those times when one is seeking calm from the everyday hectic pace of life. Also, there is no need for multiple listens in order to enjoy or appreciate the songs; from the first spin through your CD player, you will like them all.

Lyrically, each successive play of the disc reveals another meaning to each of the songs. But basically, the lyrics "paint" the reflections of Mr. Taylor's thoughts on the "autumn" of life, falling in love, marriage, and other life experiences. The finished product makes the listener almost believe that James Taylor - and only James Taylor - could meaningfully sing about these topics.

All in all, there is nothing to dislike about "October Road". It's quite simply a relaxing, enjoyable CD that has already gotten a lot of play in my stereo. I would debate that the "special edition" of this release - which includes, among others, the duet "Sailing To Philadelphia" (sung with the incomparable Mark Knopfler on his solo effort released a year or so ago) - doesn't do much to add to the finished product. I do not own the "special edition" of "October Road", and frankly, don't think I am missing anything - especially since I own most of the bonus songs found in the "special edition".

In any regard, I give "October Road" the full five star rating. It is sure to be another classic in the discography of this great musician. James Taylor - like an old friend - proves once again that he is "Mr. Reliable" when it comes to producing great music. And like that old friend, Mr. Taylor's music, new or old, is welcome at my house anytime.

Description of October Road by James Taylor

12 tracks. Jewelbox lid is cracked but is stickered: Featuring ON THE 4TH OF JULY, WHENEVER YOU'RE READY and HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS.
There's a comfortable sense of the familiar to James Taylor's first collection of new songs since 1997's Grammy winner Hourglass; such is the curse of being a decades-spanning cultural icon. But, as on his best work, there's also an almost stealthy sense of musical restlessness that seeps into Taylor's songs here, as he colors some with deft jazz and international influences. The reunion with producer Russ Titelman (they last collaborated on 1976's In the Pocket) seems to have gratifyingly inspired as much gentle reassessment as retrenchment. Longtime Titelman compatriot Ry Cooder guests on the title track, a song whose autumnal comforts fit the Taylor canon and other album tracks like "September Grass," "Baby Buffalo," "My Traveling Star," and "On the Fourth of July" (the story of Taylor's romantic meeting with current wife Kim) like an old slipper. However, "Belfast to Boston" cries for peace in Ireland and elsewhere with some surprising Gaelic flourishes, while "Whenever You're Ready" throws some Brazilian rhythms and jazzy horns into the mix, and Dave Grusin's slick orchestral arrangement turns "Mean Old Man" into an elegant cabaret surprise. A little more of this musical adventure amidst the familiar romantic ballads and paeans to the comfort of home and family--including a gorgeously spare cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"--certainly wouldn't hurt. --Jerry McCulley
