Music Review: Sweet Baby James

James Taylor can sing ANYTHING and make it sound great. When we saw him last summer he sang a number of songs off this album. It really does not matter that these are "covers" of other peoples work because, as always, he makes them his own. My personal favorite is his cover of the Jimmy Webb song "Witchita Lineman". He brings more depth to that song than any of the previous versions I have heard. The same is true of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". The album is a nice mix of the familiar ("On Broadway", "Summertime Blues") and the unfamiliar ("It's Growing"). My only gripe is that I wish he included the reasoning for some of his selections in the liner notes. Shawn Colvin did this on her "Cover Girl" album and I found it interesting and enlightening. GREAT ALBUM!! Kick back and enjoy listening to a master. (PS-If you have never seen him in concert, it is a MUST!!)
