Music Review: Ralph Vaughn Williams Symphony No. 2: One of the Great Symphonies

Scanning the programming of orchestras both in this country and around the world reveals a sad neglect of performances of Ralph Vaughn Williams' 1920 Symphony No.2 'A London Symphony'. Hearing it performed live in a hall that can accept all of the acoustical challenges the composer required makes the listener realize what a brilliant work this is. Not only was the work initially welcomed by audiences when it was performed - a symphony that was gratefully akin to a tone poem describing the majesty and history of a great city - but now, hearing the work without the sentimental attachments usually ascribed to this and all of Vaughn Williams works, it is apparent that it is a symphony of extraordinary power. The orchestration (calling for a very large orchestra) is complex and covers the spectrum of emotions from near warlike ferocity to quietly pensive moments. There are excellent solo passages for viola (not unlike the composer's famous 'The Lark Ascending'), French horn, harp, and English horn, stunning percussion section writing, and ingenious use of gentle string writing as evocative as any of the misty Impressionism of Debussy or Ravel.
Andre Previn has a special affinity for Vaughn Williams' music and here, in addition to his spectacular reading of the 2nd symphony he offers a fine airborne performance of 'The Wasps, Aristophanic Suite, for orchestra from the incidental music Overture' and has joined with violinist James Oliver Buswell IV in the 'Concerto Accademico' - a work that is intriguing for its rarity of performance than for its intrinsic qualities as a finished work. But for those who wish to get to know this 'neglected' 20th century masterwork, this recording is certainly one of the best - and one of the most affordable! Grady Harp, January 10
