Music reviews of Undiscovered

Music Review: It's time to discover James Morrison...
Rating: 5 Stars

Collectively, `Undiscovered' is one of the greatest CD's to come out in quite a while. Each song on the album is designed to reach the listener and get them involved and invested in the album and in this amazingly talented singer. Truth be told, I am becoming obsessed with this breed of music; the whole rawness of this soul music is just captivating me, and James Morrison lives and breathes soul. From the gurgle in his throat to the rasp in his delivery, Morrison has a unique voice that is both mesmerizing and unforgettable.

The album jumps off with `Under the Influence', a bouncy and very engaging soulful track complete with piano keys and Morrison's signature gargle (is that what I should call it? It sounds bad but it's NOT). `Wonderful World' is probably one of the best tracks on the album, sublimely constructed and beautifully touching. The lyrics feel very true and honest, and when you couple those types of lyrics with Morrison's raw vocals it adds so much more meaning to the track. This funky almost jazz club feel is carried on in other tracks as well, but it feels more subdued. The next track, `You Got That Something', is a good example of this. It has that bounce, but it has more fluidity.

That's one thing about this album in its entirety; it is very smooth.

There is a one, two punch for me that comes next; the brilliance that is `The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore' and `One Last Chance'. Personally `The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore' is such a tender and beautiful song that it brings me close to tears. Such a compassionate look at a failing relationship; and the melody is stunningly peaceful. `One Last Chance' has almost an R&B vibe to it, and Morrison's vocals are crisp and serene. Just listen to the way his voice elevates on the lyric "don't say that you have given up on me"; such power and honesty. This is such a complete song; very passionate and engrossing.

Two of my favorite songs by anyone, not just by Morrison.

Maybe my least favorite track here is the title track, `Undiscovered'. It's not a bad track, and I actually love his vocals in parts, but it comes off rather uninteresting when compared to the rest of the album. Listen to `Call the Police', which has a more subdued quality to it yet still carries that classic feeling, inserting some rock ethic to the music and creating a new dynamic. It's a better example of what `Undiscovered', the song, could have been.

`This Boy' and `Better Man' are two beautifully stripped down tracks and appeal to the rawness of Morrison's voice and deliver a very simple yet engaging look at this artist. `The Boy' is one of my favorites on the album; lyrically and vocally and musically. `The Letter' is also very well done, adding a bluesy vibe to the album. It has a coolness about it that is enticing.

The closing track `The Last Goodbye' feels like a bit of a departure for Morrison, but it works to a degree. I would have closed with something else personally. It's not that this is a bad song by any means, and I understand closing an album with a track that talks about `last goodbyes' but personally I would have preferred `Better Man' or `This Boy' closing out the album.

Oh well.

When you take the folksy side of Ray LaMontagne, the funk of Jason Mraz and the soul of John Mayer you have James Morrison; a name you would do well to familiarize yourself with.

Description of Undiscovered

International pressing. 'Undiscovered' is the debut album from singer-songwriter sensation, James Morrison. Taking a bluesier, more soulful route than some of his contemporaries, Morrison has drawn on elements of his troubled upbringing to produce an album that has real depth emotionally and musically. Includes the single 'You Give Me Something'. Universal. 2006.
Young James Morrison has "success story" written all over him. Drawing influence from soul greats like Cat Stevens, Otis Redding, and Van Morrison, debut album Undiscovered reveals this Rugby-born vocalist has the sort of world-weary voice and songwriting chops to take the Later...With Jools Holland path to mainstream success that's formerly made stars of Damien Rice, James Blunt, and former tour-mate Corinne Bailey Rae. In keeping with his soul influences, much of Undiscovered has a full, warm multi-instrumental sound neatly rendered by Martin Terefe, producer for the likes of KT Tunstall and Ron Sexsmith. "Under the Influence", a passionate upfront love song, is borne along on florid piano and Beatles-esque string arrangements, while the tear-stained "Wonderful World" matches its emotional message ("I know that it's a wonderful world/But I can't feel it right now") with optimistic brass and cascading percussion. Album stand-outs come with "You Give Me Something" and the closing "Better Man", a solo acoustic number that really showcases the range of Morrison's voice. Purists may still baulk at the prospect of a white lad from the North of England singing soul, but the sure success of Undiscovered ought to prove that a strong voice will always be the bottom line. --Louis Pattison
