Music Review: Cotton's best

I was walking down the street in Cambridge MA in the 80's with a friend, around 9PM, looking for something to do. We were from Boston but had gone across the river to Cambridge to mix it up. We were just walking around looking for a good bar, maybe meet some women or just have a few drinks, and we heard this incredible music drifting up the street. We walked down a small alley and there was a little blues club, 'Nightstage'. On the door, a billing for James Cotton. It spoke about his legendary status, how he played with Muddy Waters and other luminaries. Reading that and hearing the music coming out, we decided to go in. To this day, this is still the most memorable show I have ever seen. James Cotton, two feet away, just going OFF. Full horn section. Great backing band. They basically were playing a lot of the stuff on this album.
That night changed my life, at least musically. I became deeply interested in roots blues, piedmont, delta, chicago. I began playing harmonica myself, and later learned Delta blues style slide guitar.
Anyway, to get back to this particular recording. I have basically every disc I could find that has James on it. All his stuff with Muddy. Everything that he has put out as well. And while there are many fine fine examples of his playing. This particular disk is still the best of James in my opinion. The style of the music, the band, the arrangements, everything just really bring out his best and man this is just an unbelievable recording. In my opinion, the best harmonica featuring disc ever recorded. James has a bunch of other great ones as well. Live from Antoines is almost as good. High Compression is awesome as well. And disc 2 and 3 of the Chess Muddy Waters Box set featuring James is the best of his work from that era.
HIGHLY recommended. If you like harp, if you like James, you will love this.
