Music reviews of Melancholy Baby

Music Review: Hopefully I Still Have a Job!
Rating: 5 Stars

Jazzers are always looking for the next "First Lady Of Song," or the reincarnation of "The Devine One," or.... Well, it's still too early to be sure - after all, "Melancholy Baby" is only her fourth album - but Jaimee Paul just might be "The Voice!"

Jaimee Paul is a jazz singer working out of Nashville. Her roots go deep into gospel and country music - she was once a back-up singer for Lyle Lovett and Wynnona Judd - and she sounds like nobody else singing jazz today. Like I said, it's still too early to tell, but someday Ms Paul's voice may be considered one of the glories of 21st century jazz - it's a warm, almost flute-like alto, full of smoke and velvet. Her diction would make an English teacher dispair - it's sloppy and slurred - like Dean Martin at 1 AM - but on the right songs, it's perfect. And "Melancholy Baby" is full of the right songs.

"Melancholy Baby" is a set of standards like "Come Rain or Come Shine," "A Sunday Kind of Love," "What'll I Do," and, of course, the title song; mixed with some surprises - how about Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready,"(an absolutely gorgeous version) and Nina Simone's "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl," (and with my apologies to the ladies, I have got to say that Ms Paul's version of this song will turn almost any man to jelly). And then there's Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain" - a song that when sung by Ms Holiday was so filled with pain that it was almost unbearable. Ms Paul's version is much lighter - it's almost gently playful. Oh yeah, Ms Paul also turns in an achingly beautiful rendition of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" and a version of "Don't Cry Baby" that just may remind you of Aretha Franklin.

Ms Paul is supported by too many musicians to mention - there are at least three different groups - but everybody involved turns in outstanding work - in particular pianists Beegie Adair, (who worked with Ms Paul on her breakout album, "At Last"), and Lori Mechem; Jason Webb, who contributes some great organ solos; Jack Jezzro, who found the time to add some outstanding guitar work when he wasn't producing the album; and of course Ms Paul's husband, Leif Shires, whose tasteful trumpet has been a highlight on all of her records.

The sonics are first rate: Ms Paul's voice is front and center and there's plenty of instrumental separation.

Bottom line: I was one of the few Amazon reviewers that didn't give Ms Paul's "At Last" five stars. I won't revisit my reasons here, (although I still think that Ms Paul's love of "drama" sometimes sends her over the top - but so did Sarah Vaughan's, so Ms Paul's in pretty good company). I'll simply say that "Melacholy Baby" is the album I wanted "At Last" to be. I was playing it in my car this morning on the way to work. I called my boss, "I'm gona be late." "Oh," says he, "Traffic bad again?" "No, actually I'm listening to Jaimee Paul's new record. I'm driving around until it's finished." It's an outstanding record. Hopefully, I still have a job!

A note on Ms Paul's discography:

Ms Paul has released three albums on Green Hill: "At Last," "Christmas Time is Here" and "Melancholy Baby." All three of these records have been reviewed and are available on Amazon. But as far as I know, her first album, "Angel Like You," - a set of standards, backed by a trio and/or small bands, and recorded on her own label - is available only on Leif Shires' web site.

Description of Melancholy Baby

Jazz vocal maven, Jaimee Paul, lends her sultry, bluesy pipes to an eclectic collection of jazz, blues and pop standards. While delivering impressive tributes to the likes of Billie Holiday ("Don't Explain", "You've Changed"), Etta James ("Don't Cry Baby", "A Sunday Kind of Love"), Nina Simone ("I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl"), Paul also puts her unique spin on such contemporary classics as U2's, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", Curtis Mayfield's, "People Get Ready", and Bill Wither's "Ain't No Sunshine."
