Music Review: Utterly Superb

No one can dispute the fact that R&B singer Jaheim could sing. With pipes based upon the greatest soul-icons of the past (the late Teddy Pendergrass and the late Luther Vandross), Jaheim always possessed prodigious pipes. Despite this, even Jaheim fans might make the comment that his albums, always strong in material and vocal performance, found the singer holding back, playing it safe vocally. That isn't to say that Jaheim didn't put his "heart and soul" into the performances, but his albums have always possessed a 'safe' quality, even with the parental advisory labels. On his fifth studio album, Another Round, he does away with the parental advisory label, opting for a more 'refined' persona. Along with this transition (which many critics my overlook), he stretches his vocal nuances, adding more aerobics and more aurally noticeable vocal runs. In my opinion, vocally, Jaheim sounds much more soulful and appealing, without the thuggish persona and with added vocal aerobics. The material is a strong as previous material in my mind, made all the more appealing by Jaheim's more impressive vocal persona on this effort. This album will appeal more to the adult R&B audience, much like Maxwell's Grammy-winning BLACKsummers'night, but that is where Jaheim fits in best in my mind. To call this album 'revolutionary' would be an overstatement, but it certainly finds Jaheim fitting into one niche more than his other albums; 2007's gold-certified The Makings of a Man, his first Atlantic album, was the first step in this 'adult R&B' direction.
The album opens with the classic sounding single "Ain't Leaving Without You," which could've easily appeared on a 1980s soul album. Despite it's vintage sound, it doesn't sound like an anachronism, but just a solid, good ole R&B track. With "Ain't Leaving Without You", Jaheim makes it clear that the track is true R&B and not 'hip-hop'. On "Finding My Way Back", the singer continues in an urban direction, but doesn't make any concessions to hip-hop, save for his rhythmic singing. As beautiful and solid as "Ain't Leaving Without You", Jaheim once again bats a thousand. Vocally, he's never sounded better.
"Whoa" features and old-school, dusty hip-hop beat that is conservative, but perfect for Jaheim. With subtle, soul-driven piano as his palette to paint his soulful, syrupy vocals, Jaheim's again delivers a valedictory, soul-laden performance. Jaheim takes a victory lap on the exceptional "Till It Happens To You", clearly one of the most soulful tracks of the album, in which a choir (or at least several vocalists within the mix) back up Jaheim's uplifting vocals/lyrics. Jaheim continues the pace with the most revolutionary track of the album, the clever "The Bed Is Listening", which is contemporary enough to grab young listeners and conservative enough to maintain Jaheim's older fan base. Clever production and songwriting make "The Bed Is Listening", arguably the best track (or one of the best) tracks on the album.
On the fine "Impossible," Jaheim obviously lifts from Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves a Woman". While purists (those baby boomers) may cling to the original and disdain the lifting of an obvious classic, I think "Impossible" is a genius way to re-introduce and keep alive the spirit of classic soul. Jaheim captivates in the performance. On the title track, "Another Round", Jaheim is still impressive, though he hearkens back to his more "thuggish" side of albums like 2001's Ghetto Love. Even so, he does it sans the cussing and with a more refined sense, showing the true 'evolution' of Jaheim. Let's face, "Another Round" is a good song and Jaheim sings it very well.
"Her" sounds like it could've been a home on a Joe album or any adult-contemporary R&B singer. Solid, it is a pleasant listen. "II Pink Lines" isn't revolutionary, but solid, which is key. "Otha Half" proves more satisfactory, finding Ja settling into a nice, sensual slow jam, which he is so adept at. "Closer" and "In My Hands" both prove to be beautiful, adult-R&B helmed tracks while a remix of "Ain't Leaving Without You" featuring Jaheim's oft collaborator Jadakiss closes the exceptional affair.
Revolutionary? No, but the album does find Jaheim extending his voice and crafting even more poignant performances. 4 stars, easily. Fine album.
Description of Another Round
With his smooth, sonorous tone, Jaheim is the forerunner and torch-carrier of today's soul-originated R&B. A vocalist in the tradition of such greats as Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross, he signed with former Naughty By Nature beat man Kay Gee's Divine Mill record label in 2000. Jaheim released three albums over five years: his 2001 debut, Ghetto Love; 2002's sophomore set, Still Ghetto - both of which reached RIAA platinum status; and 2006's Ghetto Classics. During that time, he also scored nominations for the BET and Soul Train Music Awards. In 2007, the chart-topping artist returned with his Atlantic Records debut, The Makings of a Man. After taking time off following the release of Ghetto Classics, Jaheim returned with a renewed focus on the direction in which he wants to take his career.Pop CDs
