Music reviews of The Last KissMusic Review: Can't Be Mad, Just Hope This Isn't His Last. 3.5 stars Rating: 4 Stars
Jada was well on his way to becoming the biggest emcee of our time, this was supposed to be originally called "Kiss My Ass" but instead he gave us "The Last Kiss" I really hope this won't be his last as the title suggests, he has only put out 3 albums in a decade which is why he is such an underrated rapper. Yet, because of his infinite features and numerous mixtapes, Kiss has proven time and time again why he is the best in The LOX, (nowadays D-Block) and in the game, his wordplay is incredible and his delivery unstoppable! This is what gives him his concrete reputation and die-hard fans ever since "Last Day" with Biggie, Jadakiss has been going at it non-stop. His beef with 50 was a strong attempt at ending wack, corny fake Gangsta/ Commercial pop rap but to no avail because people all over the world slept on him, even with support from Eminem! As a result of this Jada is pissed, he has gotten plenty shine but still to this day people sleep on him... This was supposed to be a record about him being fed up, F The World like Mash Out would say but it became just a big commercial hit. He was talking about how it would be called "Kiss My Ass", saying F the haters, F the fame but for some reason he hooked up with Jay-Zzzzzzzzz and got signed to The Roc which was once pretty good. Now this being said, I was feeling what I was hearing before the album was dropped, "Who Run This" is a classic. The "Kiss My Ass" mixtape had it not been a mixtape is a classic and all those other songs (Millie freestyle, Welcome To The Roc, etc.) really hyped-up the album well. Even the single "By My Side with Ne-Yo although commercial is an ill track and a classic. I was really starting to believe that Al-Qaeda Jada was truly the Hip-Hop savior...
Even if this is a 100 times better than any commercial release this year and lyrically 10 times better than The BP 3, it is far from a classic, that title would go to Raekwon's - Only Built For Cuban Linx II and the best album of the year would go to Tech N9ne - King Of Darkness (check my reviews).
In my opinion, Jay saved all the good beats for his album, gave Jada the rejects, just my opinion, the features suck. There's just no other way to put it, although the Wu & D-Block brought it, they really weren't given the spotlight and it shows. Nas also gave a great appearance, other than that it is almost crap. There are way too many featurings which is cool when it doesn't sink the ship. Ne-Yo I could put up with, I liked him actually but other r&b artists? I wasn't feeling them. When I saw Mary J. Blige's name on the back of the cover I went apes. She is a legendary R&B artist and to think of her collaborating with Kiss Of Death was like a bomb going off in my head but she really didn't help the album at all.
The cd starts off and it feels like Hell On Earth, like the devil's claws were right in front of you ready to take you. I could smell the flames coming out of Jada's mouth that's how good it is. This is by far the best introduction I have ever heard from any album. jada's style is undeniable and he showcases it often on this album. While talking about life, that's what I love from him. "Slick Talk Pain & Torture". After that is the single "Can't Stop Me" featuring Ayanna Irish, she also makes a great appearance. Classic song, explains why he really can't be stopped. So far so good, classic intro, clasic songs. Next is the club anthem "Who's Real" featuring O.J. Da Juiceman. Let me put it this way, O.J is a fake hustler with no talent at anything in life whatsoever. He can't even move his arms right as seen in the Who's Real video clip. Besides that, the song has a very Ruff Ryders feel to it and Jada rips the track to shreds. The "Who's Real" Ruff Ryders remix is better but Jada's verses make the original hot. Again, I understand, O.J. is an up & coming pop artist and that's what sells. So far the album is still gold. Then it all goes downhill. The single which I'm not sure was even a hit "Grind Hard" with Mary J. has a lame beat that is way too techno sounding & the song was really more about M.J. than Jada, you can tell. Wasn't this a Jadakiss song? However I love Jada's flow in this particular song and this was another necessary song, we all love Miss Blige and this song is for the ladies. I would definetly watch it on t.v. or listen to it on the radio it's just I was hoping for a more classic duet along the lines of Meth's and Mary J's "You're All I Need". Still though it's a good album so far with just one skip track and 3 heavy hitters. Than we have another single "Something Else" which I was imagining hearing thumping out of every car speaker in the neighborhood. Strangely, no-go? Contrary to popular belief, this song is good. You have to appreciate southern style music to enjoy the beat. The hook is lacking but that's what they* (brain-dead pop freaks) want to hear. Jeezy's verse is bad and slightly annoying but it could've been worse. Next song up "One More Step" featuring STYLES P from D-BLOCK. For those of you who don't know STYLES is the second best member of THE LOX (Living Off Xperience). Although I anticipated this song, it just didn't bring it for me. The wordplay is impressive but not catchy enough and the beat ehhhhhhh. It's disappointing, missing heart, the song, "The People" with STYLES off his "Kiss My Ass" is way better. Right after this you have the poor attempt at Pharell making a club hit "Stress Ya". It sounds exactly like his old boring songs, with a tiny Neptunes feel. He is washed up. Again for the ladies but I don't think they enjoyed it much or even heard it for that matter. Just keeping it real. Next up is "What If" featuring the legendary Nas. Thank god for this song, it is very Hip-Hop, the beat is poppish but sounds good and lyrically you could not ask for more creativity. Disputably the best song on here. Let's keep going, the next song is "Things I've Been Through" with at first glance no featurings until you hear it, surprise! It's none other than, what's his name, Luther Vandross! I don't know who the hell this guy is and I don't like him. This song literally puts me to sleep every time I hear it, he has a nice voice but come on, another R&B artist! Why?!! The beat if you can call it that is downright boring, I can hardly believe Devine produced this garbage which many people seem to like. They should have put Ray Charles instead. What I do like about this song though is Jada. Yes! YEs! and YES! Great storytelling from Tha Masta as he gets a little more personal than usual explaining the ups & downs of his career. 3/5. Moving on, "I Tried" featuring Avery Storm. Another talentless pop artist coming up. The song would have been excellent without him. Great subject matter but weak artist. the next song is "Rocking With The Best" the title is really misleading, this is a garbage track, not even mixtape material, I guess it's a track for the players or what not. Jada still delivers and it's catchy. "Smoking Gun" with Jasmine Sullivan... Who the hell is she? Where did she come from? Why is she on here? She has a great voice, yes but she takes the shine away from Kiss. Sadly, she just sings way too much and takes away from the Hip-Hop feel of the song. Although it is a nice story-telling, I agree with the others, it feels old, we've heard this many times before.
The following tracks are great, just when you thought he had forgotten all about the hood: "Cartel Gathering" with Ghostface Killah and Raekwon The Chef from The Wu-Tang bring the ruckus, classic street joint. "Come And Get Me" featuring SHEEK LOUCH and S.I. (D-BLOCK Beeatch!) is that good old D-Block ish we're used to hearing from the squad, I just wish Styles would of been on here, it's another classic street joint.
The gritty streetness doesn't last long though next tune is "By My Side" featuring Ne-Yo. As I said it's a classic and I would of liked to hear it earlier on the album. I would of put "Grind Hard" as the last song and this song instead. Still though good 2 hear, very Hip-Hop & groovy! Et voila, the cd is over! Feeling let down are ya? Don't worry, there's more! Bonus tracks yeah!
"Letter To B.I.G." great, awesome classic song! Deep, heartfelt and touching! Faith Evans is an angel. This should have been a hit single.
"Death Wish" featuring Lil Wayne... Say what you want I don't think Gayne belongs on this track. Jadakiss really hits us with that realness and Wayne really came off fake. He is unnecessary, seeing as how this is a bonus song it just proves my point. In my opinion it shouldn't be a bonus cut,
The last bonus is "Something Else" remix! featuring Snyp Life, Bully, A.P. (D-BLOCK) and again Jeezy and his U.S.D.A. click. Blood Raw has the wackest verse off the cd and to tell the truth this isn't even a remix. Jada's & Jeezy's verse are the same ones you hear on the original and it's the same beat. If you did not like the original you will hate the remix, it feels good to hear some more D-Block on the cd but other than that it's trash.
Overall, this cd is okay. The lyrics are really what make up the Lp. The album is very poorly put together, I doubt the guy who made the track listings would be able to put together a 2 dollar lego set. The beats are very commercial and very ping-pong but on the other hand, it was meant to be a commercial release. Jada's intention was to sell and that's what he did. I was surprised this cd sold so much, I think it even outsold Wayne! Congrats Jada! I hope Jay-Z won't be raping you as he did Rihanna (money wise), this is a big success in these hard times of Hip-Hop recession. This record goes to show you that even in 2009, lyrics with heart and soul can still sell. It seems as though everybody bought this album and immediately after forgot about it but at least Kiss attended his goal.
I'm sorry if the review is so long I'm just a really big J-A-D-A fan!
I recommend this to fans of Rap and Hip-Hop, if you can manage to get past the commercial vibe and beats, you will see that Jada put his heart and soul into this. Show this album support while Hip-Hop is on life support, in the end, you'll realize it was worth it. This is what rhyming's about, not that other trash you hear daily on the radio. Only an artist like this can show you true talent.
