Music Review: Amazon Needs to create a button to allow for MORE THAN 5 STARS

I first became aware of this set when Opera News reviewed it and gave it a best of the month. I love Offenbach, can't get enough of his music, but the price put me off. I wanted it, but kept putting it off because of the price. WRONG!!! Its worth every penny, this is an absolutely fabulous set.

To start with David Parry conducts superbly, which is no surprise. He completely understands the idiom, its not opera, but it sure as heck demands a whole lot of technique from the singers. Everything is just a bit lighter than it would be if it were meant to be performed on an opera stage, which is exactly right. All I can say is that the conducting is PERFECT.

The list of singers involved in this project should have tipped me off to how wonderful it would be. The list includes the seriously underrated Laura Claycomb (how come she hasn't made a Metropolitan debut yet, that is a scandal!!), the always wonderful Yvonne Kenny and Diana Montague, Alastair Miles, and Jennifer Larmore. Now add in the following singers new to me, sopranos Eliabeth Vidal (wonderful)and Cassandre Berthon (perfect sound for French repetoire and a really nice top), tenor Loic Felix, bass Mark Stone and several other artists all of whom add to the merriment.

The selections include solo pieces, but also include duets and larger ensembles which is what Offenbach does so very well. Highlights for me include Disc 1, tracks 3 (Je peins, je crayonne), 13 (La Chaconne from Mousieur et Madame Denis), 14 and 15 (two selections from Le Voyage dans la lune, the second of which is a hysterically funny ensemble about snowing. When the group starts singing Brrrrrrr I defy you to not laugh.) From Disc 2 tracks 3 (again Le Voyage dans la lune), 7, 13 and 17 are outstanding.

You will love this set if you like Contes d'Hoffman or any of the better known operettas such as Orpheus in the Underworld and La Belle Helene. If you don't know either of those, may I suggest a wonderful release from Classics for Pleasure that has hightlights in English of those plus La Vie Parisienne by Sadler Wells Opera in the 60's. Better still, get them both and settle in for an Offenbach orgy.
