Music Review: Josquin on Lute!! But "broken" style?

Given the wonderful things said in the two previous reviews, all of which are spot-on, I feel compelled to point out the one odd thing about the CD that I noticed right off. Mr. Heringman chose to perform lute intabulations of Josquin DesPrez (c1450's -1521) - the greatest composer of the High Renaissance, and a comtemporary of Leonardo Da Vinci - in the 17th Century French "broken" style. This style is appropriate for clavecin (harpsichord) music several generations after Josquin died. If you are unfamiliar with the "broken" style, it involves constantly starting & stopping the rhythmic flow. Renaissance music - the choral music Josquin was so famous for, and that is transcribed & intabulated for lute & vihuela here - should have an ethereal flowing grace w/o continually starting & stopping. But his changes in tempo are not jarring. (Why did I go to the trouble to say something less than glowing about this CD? Josquin is my favorite composer - in history, not just in the Renaissance - and I love the sound of the lute. I'm listening from the standpoint of having heard thousands of hours of serious Renaissance choral music, not as someone who mainly listens to guitar.)
Jacob Heringman plays 2 different 6 course lutes, one in G, and one in E - and a 6 course Vihuela in G. The lower courses are octave-doubled, the upper unison-doubled. He picks without nails, as was the custom 400 years ago, and rests his right pinky on the soundboard (also standard then). Because his pinky is fixed in one place on the soundboard, there is scant variation in timbre. He varies the dynamics over only a slight range, yet in a way that's somehow very effective. Chords are all very clearly voiced. He has very good technique, a soft touch - and a "soft" style that is very pleasing on the ears.
My favorite piece on the CD is the 2nd Kyrie from Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua set for Vihuela by Alonso Mudarra (Glosa sobre un Kyrie postero), track #16 on the CD. It's a real hidden gem, very well-played, ending on a great cadence in a way that seems to work best on double gut-strung instruments. I also really like Francesco Spinacino's setting of Comment Pent Avoir Joye (#4 on the disc) - it has some great chords with melodic suspensions that are beautiful, and very indicative of Josquin's unique style. Spinacino published in 1507 - during Josquin's lifetime.
To sum up, I'd say it's all very good if you're prepared to hear lute music from the High Renaissance played in the "broken" style. I'm listening to it now, and enjoying it!
