Music reviews of The Naked Ride HomeMusic Review: At His Best When He's "NAKED".....And (Maybe!) Alone
Upon my first two or three listens of THE NAKED RIDE HOME, Jackson Browne's first new CD in six years, I was convinced the stronger cuts were the ones Browne composed on his own. The ones written with his band seemed almost....calculated and forced.....and paled next to the "solo" stuff. Well, after weeks of repeated spins, I'm of a different opinion: this is, without a doubt, one of Browne's strongest overall releases, comparing favorably to his late 70's/early 80's output versus his mid 80's/90's fare. Opening up the disc is the gentle sway of the title track. This is classic Browne, all bare bones and heart-tugging, with a touch of yearning/regret/sorrow thrown in for good measure. And then there's the lyrics: "She gathered her clothes/And ran through the yard in the dark/Up onto the porch like a flash, and inside/Then one room at a time/I watched every light in our house come on/Like the truth that would eventually dawn/Forcing me to decide." The disc hits a rocky patch with "The Night Inside Me", a semi-rocker that seems a bit fabricated, and the heavy handed, politically-themed "Casino Nation", but rebounds nicely with "For Taking The Trouble", one of the sweetest, most romantic songs Browne has ever written. With it's soft vocal and minimal instrumentation, it's almost as if you're listening to him sing "You're learning how to talk about it/You're learning how to bend/It's like you're learning how to walk all over again" in front of the fire in his living room. "Never Stop" is one of the tracks that changed my mind about the "band" thing. The track has a pulsating, hypnotic vibe going on throughout, with all elements - music, lyrics, vocals - coming together in just the right way. As the soulful, melodic keyboards mix with the sparse guitar, solid beats and soaring harmony vocals, we're transported back to the glory days of Rosemary Butler and Doug Heyward. "Walking Town" isn't Browne at his best (this is one of the "band" tracks that initially turned me off), but I've got to admit there's something alluring to this moody song, whatwith it's snaking keyboards, economical guitar, funky bass and just-right percussion. "About My Imagination" is a touching biographical track. It must be tough for anyone to open up like this, but that's what makes an artist an artist, and Browne is one of the best: "It's been so hard sometimes to find my way/I let my pleasure lead my little world astray/And if I'm truthful I'll say that I was blind/To everything about this life but what I had in mind." Starting out all slow and easy, the song rises to a fevered pitch, tossing around some gnarly blues and jazz grooves along the way. It's like a classic Jackson Browne song covered by the Boxing Gandhis! In other words, brilliant! As for "Sergio Leone", I don't understand the track or it's inclusion here, so I won't even TRY to comment on it! On the other hand, "Don't You Want To Be There" has an angelic quality that fits in perfectly. I never would have pictured Browne doing a gospel-flavored track, but as you get older things change, and this song about putting your affairs in order (at one time or another) proves it: "And those you have wronged, you know/You need to let them know some way/And those who have wronged you, know/You'll have to let them go someday." With it's gorgeous vocal give and take, spot-on arrangement and winding trumpet solo, this song is captivating in a totally ethreal way. The disc closes with "My Stunning Mystery Companion", a smart and shuffling answer to the tabloids and all their "Who-is-he-dating-now?" questions. It's taken a while, but he's happy, and part of the happiness comes from looking to the future, not the past, as well as realizing there's someone else involved in all of this ("I know that you don't want to be/Out here forever on this road/Or live amoung the boxes/Where all my past lives have been stowed" and "Maybe you were joking when you said/You'd take me for ten years and no more/Maybe you've had the best of me/But you could take another ten years and be sure"). Here's hoping we have at least ten more years of RIDEs like this from Jackson Browne!
