Music reviews of Things We Like

Music Review: THINGS WE LIKE
Rating: 4 Stars

One disc 48 minutes approximately. The sound has been remastered and is clean, with good separation between the instruments. This reissue retains a bit of the warmth found in the original vinyl release. The booklet is very informative, giving a good view of this music and the era that spawned it. There are a number of small black and white photographs which give added depth to the notes. There is a "bonus" track appended to this release.

Recorded in 1968,this is what people (especially in America) then thought of as jazz,as played by some of the more adventurous English players. Its difficult at this late date to relate to people how forward-thinking this album was when released. The vast majority of listeners (again in America) simply were not aware of much of what was taking place in Britain during a short, but interesting time. Certainly people knew of Jack Bruce (bass),with his association with the band CREAM. A relatively few knew of John McLaughlin (guitar),who would play on the albums "Devotion" and "Extrapolation". At the time, very few were aware of the the band, the GRAHAM BOND ORGANISATION,where Dick Heckstall-Smith (saxophones-sometimes two at once) had played with Bruce. And no one really knew of the fine drummer,Jon Hiseman.

The music on this disc is an aural snapshot of the late sixties, when musicians from different backgrounds would get together and jam,and if they were lucky, record an album. While these tracks are not strictly jazz as most listeners then heard it,there is a large foundation here that is straight jazz. This is primarily because of Bruce's bass and Hiseman's drumming. The bass was sometimes almost a lead instrument, while at the same time filling in any holes in the music. Hiseman's drums propelled everything along, never calling attention to his style-listen to his cymbal work. Sometimes playing in straight jazz time, sometimes going outside that a bit, they laid the foundation for McLaughlin's sometimes pretty, sometimes angular guitar sound. Likewise Heckstall-Smith's reeds-he would weave a pattern of notes sometimes in a straight ahead fashion, and then turn around and play something (for the times) abrasive.

The tracks are, taken together,a seamless example of a style of playing that was met with little fanfare, except for those who were aware of some of the finer points of jazz, and how it was being combined with a (at the time) more modern sound of playing. At the time everyone heard the name 'Jack Bruce',and thought this was another power quartet along the lines of CREAM. When it became apparent this wasn't high-powered rock music (just high-powered jazz) most people paid scant attention. This album sunk pretty much out of sight. And that's to bad,for this album has a lot going for it. The combination of players of this caliber recorded some very good music-it's exciting, visceral, and well thought out.

For those who like McLaughlin's angular style at this stage of his career,Bruce's on the point playing,Hiseman's superb understated drumming, and Heckstall-Smith's melodic yet sharp playing-this should be something to purchase in the near future.
