Music Review: Reaching out to diva status: llego el fenomeno Velasquez

Inching her way into the minds of a wider audience, Jaci Velasquez delivers yet another musical gem with her first full-length Spanish production Llegar a ti. Deciding to honor the Hispanic heritage handed down from grandparents, this young woman succeeds to stretch her own boundaries after having established a solid presence in the world of (Anglo) contemporary christian music . The result of her attempt is a fresh and valuable addition to Latin, contemporary christian as well as the rising hybrid of the former two. Her foray was well received and included a number 1 Latin smash hit and a Grammy nomination for best Latin pop performance; a first for a contemporary christian artist.Once again, Velasquez drives her musical offering with a superb voice and proves that she can duplicate her work in a different language. The focal point of this set is undoubtedly the stellar title cut which effortlessy summarizes the purpose of the album: reaching out to others as she reaches out to her faith. Other remarkable tracks include the hot Latin dance groove "Malantial de Caricias", the generously Caribbean-tinged "Con tu amor", the simple yet inviting "De creer en ti" as well as the carefully crafted and majestically delivered love anthem "Solo Tu". A special mention should go to the cleverly translated and performed "Como una flor". Perhaps included as carefully placed booby traps for Christian music naysayers,the breezy "Un lugar celestial" and the straightforward "Al mundo Dios amó" should be enough to hush any comments about watering down her faith.
For all the accolades the album deserves, it shows symptoms of an almost inevitable translation backlash. Songs like "Mira lo que has hecho en mi" and "Dentro esta tu voz" lack the full blown punch that came with the original English versions. Furthermore, the generally clear pattern of the album seems to be disrupted by an out-of-place and rather lack-luster "Junto a mi" which leaves the listener yearning for a powerful hook that remains elusive.
All in all, the album is destined to be counted as a milestone in both Latin pop and contemporary christian circles.Using the strong emotions inherent in the Latin soul, the set unites two categories that at first may seem antagonistic to each other. In an age where pre-fabricated and formulaic tunes seem to be the order of the day, Velásquez gives a cross-genre worthy performance. Even though the final result falls just short of a perfect score, her efforts are worthy of musical praise. The Velasquez gem continues to be polished and the signs point toward a promising future
