Music Review: Favor.

On December 11, 2005, a wintry, cool night in North Charleston, SC at the illustrious World Overcomers Ministries, a crowd of about 150+ people were anxiously waiting outside of the cineplex to witness "Another Level" of worship & praise. Yours truly, Mr. Brandon Coles was just as eagerly awaiting the entrance of Israel & New Breed for their concert series at World Overcomers celebrating their 10th anniversary of ministry. The festivities began with sound check and a rehearsal session from the members of the New Breed band. Aaron Lindsey (New Breed's musical director) walked towards my seat and I greeted him and I told him, "Do your thang, playa!! Love your work!!" Mild-mannered and humbled by my introduction, he cheerfully walked out to be prepared for the mini-concert. Pastor Thomas Riley gave a personal testimony from a series of messages he preached just days prior to the event. At approximately 8:20 pm, entering the stage were the remaining members of the New Breed band, praise ensemble and Min. Israel Houghton. This would be my 3rd time seeing them in action as the concert was filled with energy and also featured songs from their multi-Grammy and Stellar nominated "Live From Another Level" and their current smash, "Alive in South Africa." Israel & New Breed once again floored the audience. This time around, Israel shared his story. His mom was struggling with a decision to have him aborted, but as one of his songs proclaims, God simply has "Turned It Around." As a result, just nearly five months before I witnessed them in North Charleston, they recorded this album in Capetown, South Africa. This album's ultimate theme is centered totally on God's favor. As always, their musical arrangements are phenomenal. Once again, Israel and his writing team thrive on simplicity to bolster their lyrical content, yet, they still convey their songs through scripture. From beginning to end, the album focuses on increase and challenges the believers to expect the 'windows of heaven' to open as God sends His rain. "Favor of The Lord" and "Turn It Around" both are highly-charged and enriching. My favorite songs would have to be "Take The Limits Off/No Limits," "Still Standing," "Alive," "I Will," the sweet balladry of "To Worship I Live," (a.k.a. "Away") "Alpha & Omega," the jaunty instrumental tag to "I Will" known as "African Skies," Israel's studio duet with his daughter, Mariah, in the worship-filled "He Knows My Name," and Jonathan Butler's [the man who sings "Falling in Love With Jesus" from Kirk Whalum's "Gospel According to Jazz II" album] "Come and Let Us Sing." Honestly, I believe this album is the answer to "Another Level." It's distinctive, but it still possesses the fire of both live albums. The true essence of worship is equivalent to the life cycle of any creation. In our example as believers, we have to learn how to worship God at the beginning of our lives. Once you have attained the knowledge of God's sovereignty, you must always focus on acquiring the favor of God. Come with the attitude of believing that 'God will do exceedingly and abundantly. Above all you ask Him for.' As for "Alive," this album is structured in a timely manner and it is a perfect example that through every trial, all of God's people are "Not Forgotten!" Good work Israel & New Breed and I hope to see you guys again in concert!!! *One Love*
