Music Review: Ismaelo at his best....

After going on his own, this was one of his first recordings. It was for the TICO label, one of the salsa labels in New York at the time, released in 1972.
Allow me an aside about one of the sidemen in this recording;
Manolin Gonzalez, the alto player in the session, was a personal friend and business associate. Born in the Dominican Republic, Manolin spent some time in Chicago, where we met, shortly after the record came out. He had put a band together in Chicago and they used to rehearse in my apartment. It ruined my relationship with the neighbor across the hall.
This album and the other TICO Ismael Rivera records are among his best.

Description of Esto Fue Que Trajo El Barco
Designated "El Sonero Mayor" (the foremost improvising Latin singer), though there has been recent controversy about when and from whom he acquired this epithet. Needless to say, Rivera, also affectionately known as Maelo, has been showered with superlatives and been the subject of numerous tribute songs. He was blessed with a crystal clean tenor voice, which he later honed into a unique improvisational instrument.This album was originally released in 1972 and Rivera soon became a major star, but his fame precipitated depression, which "made him temporarily turn away from his musical goal, searching for life's highs through other channels." He issued seven more solo albums between 1973 and 1980. But this one remains one of the fan and critics' favorites. Essential to all collections!
