Music reviews of Body Kiss

Music Review: The R. Kelly and Ronald "Mr. Biggs" Isley Show
Rating: 3 Stars

Ok, before I go on and do my thing here on this review, lemme just say that I love the Isley Brothers and R. Kelly all the same. The Isleys have been able to create classic songs for more than six decades--which is more than any other group that's been out since these guys first hit the charts in 1959 with "Shout". Their catalogue is endless. R. Kelly has been able to create classic songs in nearly 15 years. He's also proven to be a consummate performer, producer, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, musician, etc. Love or hate, you couldn't stop the "Pied Piper" even if you try on a musical sense.

But considering that in 2003, the Isley Brothers weren't the original 3 (Ronald, Rudolph, O'Kelly) or 3+3 (Ronald, Rudolph, O'Kelly, Marvin, Chris Jasper and Ernie) or even the three members that proved to be the final listing for 1996's "Mission to Please" (Ronald, Ernie & Marvin). Instead for the last three years, it's been Ronald and Ernie and yet on this new album, "Body Kiss", Ernie doesn't get enough love or support from Kells until track 9 (Take A Ride). In fact for the most part, it's the R. Kelly and Mr. Biggs Show more than the Isleys.

But that doesn't mean I'm hating. It does sound weird for someone Ron's age talking about I'm pushing whips and I cruise around the strips. Track 11 (I Like) sounds like it was left off B2K's Pandemomium CD. It was like Omarion or someone said that they didn't want to cut this and unfortunately Robert decided, "What the hell, I'll give this to Ron and see how he takes it." I mean, Robert didn't make the final decision on this record so blame it on Ronnie but he's one of the few R&B/soul artists that had a love for hip-hop when it took off in the '80s. "I Like" seems the only one outta the box when you think of an Isley Brother record while SOME songs could be passed as "Chocolate Factory - The Redux Edition" since songs like "Superstar" sounds like a Curtis Mayfield-from-the-R. Kelly-studio joint that could've been a cut on CF, so is "Lucky Charm" by a default! In a sense Robert is not only producing the album, he is also singing the songs. "What Would You Do" can also seemed left-base for Ron as well as its hypnotic remix even with some annoying lyrics, lol. And "Body Kiss" could've been for Kells' "Loveland" album but Ron must've heard it and asked if he copped it for the record or something and that's why we got the title of the album. And "Busted" definitely cracks me up. But this song has to be one of the most annoying songs on here. I mean... when is Mr. Biggs gonna retire and when is Ronald going to really come back? As I said, it's not all of Kelly's doing here. Maybe since Robert started it, Ronald will finish it. Maybe "Showdown Vol. 1" is the last cut but we're not so sure.

But "Keep It Flowing", "Prize Possession", "Take a Ride" and "I Want That" is when Ronald truly shines! KIF has that Marvin Gaye flow that Kells has been building since the R. Kelly Album while "Prize Possession" also has that feel. These songs seem like a fitting tribute to the man who paved the way for him and Ronald. "Take a Ride" is CLASSIC ISLEYS! And finally we hear Ernie rippin' it on the guitar like he know he should. If only two or three or four more songs were in that flavor and Ernie had time, then this will be a GREAT solid album and not just a "good" album which is why I rate it the way I did.

Overall, the album is not so bad. In fact, Kell's did a great job producing, writing and arranging most of the cuts that I felt on there with the exception of "Busted" (maybe it's because Ron is duetting with an average female singer, I don't know). In any case, the album became a monumental achievement debuting at #1 and going Platinum. It paid off for both Robert and Ronald as the "R In R&B" produced another #1 album with his own album (CF) and was very much on everyone and their mama's record in 2003 while Ronald went from hip-hop to classic soul with Burt Bacharach where his vocals truly shine.

This album is not bad at all but it won't be a classic album. But it doesn't hurt playing it over and over again. Can't hate on the boys, they did the dag-nabbit thing.

Description of Body Kiss

It?s a lot less jarring these days to hear R. Kelly?s romantic sentiments filtered through Ron Isley?s still sumptuous 60-something vocal cords. Kelly wrote and produced 11 of Body Kiss?s dozen tracks, hewing close to the sound and spirit of vintage quiet-storm Isley Brothers moments such as "For the Love of You" and "Between the Sheets." Though the lack of writing contributions from Ron and remaining brother Ernie is somewhat dismaying, this is a solid album that?s both easy on and ever-so-slightly challenging to the ears. While there?s none of the Isley?s signature funk-rock here, it?s a kick to hear the repeated "whoo" hook on the title track. The Isley Brothers remain playas worth listening to. --Rickey Wright
