Music Review: An Excellent EP With Extras To Show You Their Development

In honor of Isis's most recent release, Wavering Radiant, I figured I'd go back in time and give a review for The Red Sea.
This was Isis's last album as a four-piece with a single guitar and hence, still in the "hard & heavy" sound they started off with on Mosquito Control. The difference is that the production for the actual EP part of it was very well polished and did a lot to capture the essence of the band. The title track is what stood out the most, but the first three "EP" songs were consistent with each other and did well to produce the listener with the musical equivalent of a short form story.
Now, the latter songs of the album were demo versions of earlier songs. The recording for those are pretty haggard sounding. Specifically, it sounds like someone put a microphone in the middle of a room and hit record; there are points where the fidelity gets lost. But man alive, does it ever give you an honest introspective of what an up-and-coming band does in order to start the processes of getting by. That's something that I think I appreciate more as a result of playing music than if I were just a regular music fan.
This is what these guys were doing in a time where everyone was trying to be the next Limp Bizkit and in the end, it only furthered their preservation as a band. I recommend it to Isis fans and people who'd want to check out what proto-post metal would sound like.
