Music Review: Elegant Subtle Shades of Phrasing

Yoram Ish-Hurwitz's strength is his subtlety of phrasing which shows his love for Albeniz's music. According to his website, Yoram Ish-Hurwitz spent time in Spain studying and preparing this work and it shows in the results because the performance comes across in an effortless and convincing way. I don't know if it's fair to compare this young artist with the great Alicia De Larrocha 3rd recording (Decca 1987) of this work found here: Iberia / Navarra / Suite Espanola, but it does seem fitting to do so. I found that Ms. De Larrocha's accents are a little crisper as well has her contrasts more extreme and playing a little more flamboyant and intense. This is shown in Book 2, "Almería". One gets the impression that this music is in Ms. De Larrocha's blood. Mr. Ish-Hurwitz takes a slightly more relaxed view point. Ms. De Larrocha's lived with this music much longer before she recorded it her 3rd time than Mr. Ish-Hurwitz has in his first, so she does have an advantage. But I love both De Larrocha's and Mr. Ish-Hurwitz's performances, both are very enjoyable. Mr. Ish-Hurwitz has done exceedingly well at capturing the sunny Spanish countryside in all it's rich warm contrasts. Also, his recording has the advantage of being a sumptuous multi-channel SACD which was a joy to my ears. This recording was captured in the highest quality possible in DXD (24-bit sampled at 352.8kHz) and then converted to DSD for SACD) Overall, this is a very beautiful and satisfying SACD. Isaac Albéniz was a man of contrasts: self-disciplinary and reckless, miserly and extravagant, cerebral and sentimental. With Iberia, he attempted to capture the natural flow of ideas in a rational pattern as the romanticist and classicist in him engaged in a never-ending struggle. The true quality of this music lies in the originality with which Albéniz was able to blend varied elements--Andalusian flamenco and Parisian impressionism--and the remarkable power of imagination he demonstrated in the process.A virtuoso on par with Lazar Berman or Louis Lortie, Yoram Ish-Hurwitz is a Dutch pianist of Israeli origin. In 1988 he won the second prize at the Eduard Flipse Piano Competition in Rotterdam. Three years later, he was awarded the Jacques Vonk Prize by a unanimous international jury. Since then he has frequently performed in the Netherlands and is regular guest soloist with many orchestras. Since 2003, Ish-Hurwitz has been a Steinway artist. His discography includes works by Schubert, Chopin, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, and the complete "Années de Pèlerinage" by Franz Liszt. One of the Liszt CDs reached the Top 10 in the classical charts, and kept the #1 position for several weeks.
