Music Reviews of X FactorMusic Review: Great Record! Rating: 5 Stars
It took me quite a while to get used to this album, cuz its so unlike their earlier ones which are like instant hits... but this one is darker, moodier, and got a pretty different sound altogether. Blaze's voice is perfect for this album, not quite sure if Bruce would have made the album better. My fav songs are Sign of the Cross, Fortunes of War, Judgement of Heaven, and Edge of Darkness. Sadly the other Blaze fronted album, Virtual XI, was awful. This is Maiden's only good release from the post-SSOASS era.
Oh and one more thing, anyone who slags off this album but praises Maiden's last 2 efforts (Brave New World, Dance of Death) shouldn't be taken seriously. The last 2 have the same sound, have the same generic ideas, have the irritating repetitive choruses (only the Man on the Edge from The X Factor has an annoying repetitive chorus), nothing new & no signs of evolution. The X Factor atleast had something new to offer.
Music Review: Maiden continues legacy to the music world Rating: 5 Stars
In 1995 the world did not know what to expect from the new line up of Iron Maiden. Blaze Bailey joined them out of Wolfsbane, while Bruce Dickenson left into his own solo career. How do you replace a line-up that has gone multi-platinum worldwide many times. This would be a template on how to do that for any other band. Blaze Bailey is Brilliant in his own way on this album. He does not try to emulate the vocal range of Dickenson, and does his own take on Iron Maiden's classic arena/power NWOBHM rock. The songs are slower at times than previous albums, but there are still many blistering guitar solos and songs to get your fist pumping. Favorites for me are Blood On The World's Hands, Man on the Edge, and Sing of The Cross. This is a great album for even new maiden fans to get introduced to. It goes to show that vocals are only a small mix into something that is as evolving as Iron Maiden.
Music Review: VERY VERY BAD. Rating: 1 Stars
Ok. THis is Maiden. THis is Steve Harris and DAve Murray and Nicko McBrain. So, of course the playing here has its moments. But the trouble here is the production. It made the band sound weak and uninspired. The compositions are also very irregular. LOOK FOR THE TRUTH and FORTUNES OF WAR are the same song, they begin with the same chords at the same order!!!!!!But gone are the harmony solos, so great in the times of Murray / Smith. Gone are Dickinson's powerful vocals, strong and clear. (Blaze is great - it's just that Bruce is much better). Also, Maiden always wrote great albums when they recorded eight or nine songs per album. Now, we have twelve. So, quality drops. If you're a completist, you must own this album. If not, and if you have the Best of The Beast compilation, you're well served, because it contains THE X-FACTOR only memorable Maiden song, SIGN OF THE CROSS.
Music Review: The Most Underrated Album Iron Maiden Ever Put Out Rating: 5 Stars
Most people don't understand this album. People give it crap even though they have never even heard the song Sign of the Cross. This album is perfect for what Iron Maiden was going through at the time. No offense to Bruce fans, but Bruce is not Iron Maiden. He didn't write most of the songs and even though his voice is quite good, it is the guitar, drum, and bass work that build up to him. Just listening to the drumming in this album is amazing. It actually has variety in it and not something from the 1980's boom chuck stuff that is usually in Maiden Songs. There is also amazing layering in this album and it almost verges on the point of being progressive. If you just give it a listen you'll understand that this album is amazing in its own right. Maybe if they hadn't released this album under the name Iron Maiden, people would actually give this album the respect it deserves.
Music Review: Blaze Bayley Sucks, and drags the whole album to the gutter Rating: 1 Stars
I have just started to get back into Iron Maiden (No Prayer for the Dying was my last Maiden album) and I have enjoyed some of the albums that Maiden has put out after the early 90's time period, BUT then I stumbled across this. Good think I downloaded the thing before I bought it. Music is fine, but Blase Bayley kills this album. I can think of a hundred different people I would have sung lead before this clown. Even though he might try to imitate Bruce Dickenson, he cant even come close to his range, and his voice would be suited better for Death Metal considering that if he screams it would be an improvement over his singing. Its a shame, cause there is some good music here, but Bayley is so un-listenable, I cant even enjoy it. Maiden has so many other albums to choose from, dont even bother with this crapola. (Maybe one day the could re-record it with Dickinson)
