Music reviews of Fear of the DarkMusic Review: I was a fool, naked in the rain so to speak, but now I see my ways! Rating: 4 Stars
When I received this cd a little while back, I'll admit I was a bit nervous. Of course, I already had Powerslave, # of the Beast, Peice of Mind, and NPFTD (which were all terrifc Maiden cd's in my opinion) and I didnt think that this cd would come close to matching the four I already had. I popped the cd in and had me a listen. Here's what I heard:
Be Quick or Be Dead: This song is very cool and a greatest hit on Essentials. It's fast, heavy, and the vocals and guitar work are sensational! The solo is great and its just an awesome maiden song all around. For this cd, not maiden songs altogether of cource, I give it a 9.5/10. p.s. all my ratings on the songs will be related to just this cd.
From Here to Eternity: I didnt like it very much when I first listened to it, but after a while it kind of stuck with me. The opening guitar is very catchy and the vocals are really different from what Bruce usually sounds like. The solo from Dave is blistering and one of the best on the album. The chorus is definetly catchy and easy to sing to also! It's a very good, solid song overall and deserves a 8.5-9/10.
Afraid to Shoot Strangers: I was a fool, naked in the rain so to speak, but now I see my ways! Yes, the lines above are my header and also borrowed from Ronnie James Dio, but they are very true. When I first got this album, I listened to ATSS and shunned it, saying things about it that aren't true. Now that I've had the album for a long time, and have listened to this gem often, I can't get it outta my head. Afraid to Shoot Strangers starts off slow, and while that is why I made fun of it before, I now love it to pieces. It's a great ballad of sorts and has really meaningful vocals from Bruce and great guitar during the intro. After a while, it gets really fast with blistering solos and fast drums! This song is a perfect example of how not to judge a song on only two listens and to just let it stand on it;sown two feet! Easily a 9/10!
Fear is the Key: Everybody on this review board said that this song wasnt iron maiden, and while it's a weak song and one of my least favorites by maiden of all time, it definetly sounds like Maiden. It got a pretty decent intro and of course good solos, but other than that it's pretty damn weak for Maiden and is lacking many things. I can truthfully give it no less that a 6/10.
Childhood's End: A very strong song in my opinion, with a great intro and outstanding drums and guitar during the chorus. Awesome, meaningful verses and the lyrics in the chorus are sad, but very powerful. I loved this song the moment I heard it, and it's still one of my tops on th album. It's not slow, but it's not lightning fast either. A very enjoyable song that gets a 9/10.
Wasting Love: Also a ballad like ATSS, but it's a little heavier. I used to think this song was "ehh," but now I really enjoy it. Good, strumming guitar during the verses that gets heavier when the meaningful chorus comes in. Before the awesome solo, the guitar kind of has a "creeping" feel to it that sounds sweet. 8.5-9/10
Fugitive: A very outstanding song that reminds me alot like "Fallen Angel" off of Brave New World. Heavy guitar and pounding drums start this song off and then everything gets softer and after it gets heavy again, the verses come in and what you got is a work of art. The chorus is also one of the best on the album and as well, so this song has no true faults. The solo is also incredible. 9.5/10
Chains of Misery: This song is pretty damn sweet! The guitar during the verses is heavy and good, but what's awesome about this sng is the phenomenol, creeping guitar at the chorus, or the little part right before the chorus if you look at it that way! All in all, a strong Maiden song that has a great chorus with what sounds like the whole gang singing "Chains of Misery!" 8.5/10
Apparation: The worst off the album and probably my least favorite by Maiden. A very weak song altogether that doesn't really have any good qualities to speak of. 5/10
Judas Be My Guide: I absolutely love this song and I'll guarantee you will too. This ode to Judas Priest (in my opinion) is strong and very meaningful. The intro is new and creative and the chorus is to die for. 9.5/10
Weekend Warrior: A great rocker and metal song! The guitars are pretty easy (easy to play that is) but sound good nonetheless. I liked it and its a good, solid maiden song! 8/10
Fear of the DArk: IT WILL BE ONE OF YOUR TOP THREE MAIDEN SONGS BAR NONE! PERIOD! 10/10
>My first review really was not well thought out nor accurate and I apologize for that! I didn't listen to the album as long as I should have and I "jumped the gun" on way to many songs. While "Fear of the Dark" is in my top five least favorite albums by Maiden (Maiden doesn't have a single bad album in my book), it's still a solid, and creative piece of work by the Metal Masters. I would just like to close by saying that there are 3 points in which this album is good even if you don't like the songs: 1. This may seem a little juevenile, but who can argue that the album cover flat out kicks @ss! It is one of my favorites cover arts in all of Maiden's collections. 2: The production is very well done, much better than it's predessor an it's successor. Every instrument distriputed perfectly and they all sound awesome. The drums are some of best in all of Nicko's career, and the solos sound amazing. 3: This album was made by Maiden, Iron Maiden and therefore it is not a sloppy, thrown together pile of poop, it is a MASTERPIECE!
