Music reviews of Since the Day It All Came Down

Music Review: Great album with some great hard/soft change ups, but basically they present much of what has already been done...
Rating: 4 Stars

When I first heard about Insomnium, I heard praise of how they balance hard and soft, mostly heavy Melodic Death Metal tunes with soft acoustic and mellow guitar breakdowns in the middle of their songs. When I heard "Since it all came down", I was impressed and joyed to hear another band utilize the hard/soft dynamic. It is a breath of fresh air in the very stale genre of Metal(of all forms). Bands like Opeth, Obsidian, meshuggah and a handful of others are the only ones keeping it alive with creative forms of musical art.
But the thing that annoyed me right off the bat with "Since it all came down", and the overall style of Insomnium, is their melodic Death fasination. I can only stand traditional melodic death for so long, until I get utterly annoyed. Sure, Opeth started off with a take on the traditional melodic death that bands like In Flames, At the Gates and Arch Enemy helped create, but they quickly branched out and away from that style, probably because they knew that later on everyone and their mother would adopt that style and try to sell records with it. The problem is, that the melodic death style is REALLY cheesy and REALLY overdone, even Soilwork and a host of other bands have jumped onto the bandwagon of Melodic Death. Everyone wants to cash in on this horrible fad. In my opinion, the melodic death aspect is too predictable, often with the same thrashy and predictable beats and guitar riffs and the same boring vocals and lyrics.
Insomnium do bring some great stuff to the table in the form of guitar riffs, and the occasional different drum beat. But they are by no means re-inventing or creating something new. I would say that their greatest achievement is the incorporation of soft passages and acoustical breakdowns in their songs. But even then those get predictable and are pretty much placed in the exact same spots in each song. That is not to say that the acoustical parts and breakdowns are not nice, they are in fact awesome and add a level of depth that many-a-modern metal band is severely lacking in our "get rich quick" times.
While not nearly achieving the amazing dynamics and epic construction of songs such as the likes of Opeth, they do create some decent pieces of music that are enjoyable. My only problem with Insomnium is their heavy reliance on Melodic Death Metal. Some say that they are one of the only bands keeping the genre alive. Nostalgia is great, but that doesn't mean we should keep genres alive simply because they had a hey day. I feel the same way about modern bands playing "classic" rock sounding material. Its been done too much and frankly just boring. Melodic Death had its time in the 90's, and I don't think hanging onto the dying genre is all that good. Sure, bands like In Flames and Soilwork(to name a few) have changed styles to appeal to a wider audience, but at least they are trying something new. Look at Opeth, they changed, but they still make amazing music that does not fit into any genre.
I noticed that one reviewer stated that Insomnium are the closest thing to sounding like Opeth. He is right, in that they use hard and soft melodies in the same song, like Opeth does. But one thing that Insomnium doesn't do all that well is master the dynamics of the transitions from hard to soft. The coupled with their use of horrid melodic guitar riffs and repetitive drum beats renders this album way under perfection.
