Music reviews of Legend Of The Black Shawarma

Music Review: Great progression from previous work, but album is top-heavy
Rating: 4 Stars

The Legend of the Black Shawarma is Infected Mushroom's 7th studio album released late in 2009. This album is consistent with the progression of sound that IM has had throughout their career. The progression has gone from a sort of psychedelic techno sound into psychedelic metal. I myself am a huge fan of both psychedelic techno and heavy metal, so to see IM incorporate the two is amazing to me. While some of IM's more recent albums have included crunchy guitar riffs and quick double bass drum rolls typified by metal, the overall theme has been trance with these things added in as afterthoughts. With The Legend, the metal theme is pervasive throughout and seems to be what the entire album is structured around. I instantly fell in love with this album, and it further solidified my respect and love for IM.
One interesting aspect of this album is the multitude of ways in which the music was created. There are sampled prerecorded sounds, purely synthesized noises, and real instrument recordings all mixed together to give an incredible texture. In this way, IM carries on Stockhausen's tradition of combining multiple styles of technosonic music, but with a modern day twist. They use studio recordings of drums, electric guitar, and electric bass guitar and then do lots of modulation on these instruments to make everything sound very psychedelic. What is interesting is how they vary the amount of modulation on the recorded instruments. Sometimes there is little to no added effects, and other times it is so heavily modulated that it becomes hard to tell if it was recorded or produced through a synthesizer. This album frequently modulates an instrument's sound to the point that it blurs the origin of its method of production, and then transitions to a synthesized instrument that sounds very similar. Then, the synthesized instrument proceeds to do things that the real instrument couldn't making it sound very cool.
It is quite impressive how IM has the ability to create all of these different effects on the instruments without losing any quality of sound. The album is very "busy" at times with many layers playing at once and with very fast beats and transitions. Even with all of these things going on at once, the sound is very clean and you can tell how well the equipment was they used as well as how good IM is at producing music. This just makes me appreciate the technology that is involved with producing modern day technosonic music. IM exemplifies Max Matthews idea of: "There are no theoretical limits to the performance of a computer as a music instrument." The Legend of the Black Shawarma creates very unique noises and sonic textures that are only made possible through the use of computer music technology.
As a huge metal and psychedelic trance fan, this album is certainly a "keeper" for me. But also as an avid IM fan, I would say this is not my favorite album of theirs. The album starts off very strong, but trails off significantly after the fourth track. After this track, the songs begin to sound like remixed versions of the first four tracks. Even with this trail off in quality, I would recommend this album still based on its ground breaking new genre. Psychedelic heavy metal from one of the best trance music producers around is quite enjoyable to listen to and is an album worth buying.

Description of Legend Of The Black Shawarma

These psy-trance innovators have become one of the biggest electronic bands on the planet. Twice ranked among the world's ten best DJs by the bible of the scene, the UK's DJ Magazine, the Israel-bred, LA-based duo bring a frenetic rock energy to the form. Their explosive show, featuring guitars, live drums, intensely passionate vocals, and an ambitious multimedia backdrop ranks among the genre's most unpredictably joyous events. Their recordings continually venture where other electronic acts fear to tread. The follow-up to 2007's "Vicious Delicious" marks a return to their metal roots. Guests include Jonathan Davis (Korn) and Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyros, Satellite Party).
