Music Review: Fake band, fake songs

My one true geek passion is fake bands. Whether The Wonders, Spinal Tap, Dewey Cox, The Folksmen or Stillwater, I make it a point to seek out what makes good fake bands. So when I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and heard Jonah Hill humming along to the fake hit "Inside Of You", I was instantly drawn and got the soundtrack.
The same groundbreaking team that assembled the near-perfect Walk Hard Soundtrack (Mike Viola, Dan Bern and others) set to work on recreating the magic for Infant Sorrow's Greatest Hits album. For the most part, it worked.
I think the main problem with the album is that most of the jokes in the songs aren't necessary. The jokes work well when lampooning a particular genre (Spinal Tap and Walk Hard are excellent examples), but the quirky genres aren't there to fall back on, so you wind up with a few serious sounding songs with absurd-lyrics.
But the production is very solid: I Am Jesus and Going Up both rip The Killers quite well, while Furry Walls channels Oasis nearly perfectly.
The final two tracks are the most interesting, and probably the best joke-songs on the soundtrack. Rose Byrne's character (not sure if she actually sings) provides a great send up to Brittany pop.
But on the plus side, as with most Apatow pictures, the comedy is derived from the conversation and they needn't rely on jokey songs. Hopefully Get Him To Greek doesn't tank like Walk Hard.
