Music Review: Underrated duo from Brazil shine in their debut albums

These are two fine and rare albums by two of the most underrated musicians ever to pick up a guitar.
I have never been able to get much more than superficial information on these two men but what little I know I will share with you.
These two gents were brothers from the Tabarajas tribe of aborginals in Northern Brazil,Mussapere and Herundy.At a young age they learned to play the guitar and became so good they left their home and never,as they say,looked back.They became big in Rio and eventually throughout South America,even travelling to Europe,usually appearing in their native Tabarajas costumes.In the early /40s they started recording with RCA in Mexico and continued their touring.It wasn't until 1963 that these "over night" sensations had their first million seller with the instrumental "Maria Elena".It had been a smash in Mexico and Latin America when first recorded in 1958 and RCA decided to try their luck in the States,and it payed off.By this time the brothers had long changed their names to Natalicio and Antenor Lima.Although they continued to tour and record for years after,they never duplicated the success they had in the early 60s,which was a shame for these ultra talented guitarists.Natalicio who performed well into the 90s,recently passed away in November of 2009 while Antenor,long retired,still resides in NYC.
One listen to their music and you can tell the fantastic technique they had.I think they at times equalled and even surpassed the talents of the great clasical guitarist Andres Segovia.Among these two albums are many,many gems that will keep you coming back again and again,no question.Among my favourites are "Maria Elena",La Orilla Dal Lago,Always in my Heart,Amapola,Moonlight and Shadows and You Belong to My Heart.The liner notes provided here make a big error however.They credit Glenn Miller having had a hit with "Always in my Heart".Glenn never recorded it let alone had a hit with it.There is a Miller song here,his theme done nicely,called "Moonlight Serenade";perhaps it is just a mix up.
However way you look at it these two albums by two of Brazils greatest musical exports(possibly the only other bigger would be Carmen Miranda)are absolute musical gems that belong in the musical libraries of every discerning music buyer.These two amazing guitarists will sometimes leave you aghast at their superb technique but it is never at the expense of the melody.These albums showcase the duo at their best and some tracks even have the two harmonizing.If you read the track writer credits closley you will also be surprised at how many are self penned efforts.Underrated they are but never will they be forgotten.
