Music reviews of S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

Music Review: S.C.I.E.N.C.E: The Glory Days of Incubus
Rating: 5 Stars

Throughout the years, the band Incubus has always been reinventing themselves and trying to take their music in bold and exciting new directions. Over the course of their career, I think that it would be fair to say that they've done just that. Make Yourself showed that they could fit their way into the mainstream, Morning View displayed their ability to experiment and try new things, and even A Crow Left of the Murder saw them exposing their political side and also showing their ability to be cerebral and deep with their lyrics. I love these guys. I can honestly say that they are probably one of my favorite groups out their today.
But one thing that has always kind of ticked me off about this group is the fact that, due to all this experimentation and innovation, none of their albums ever sound the same. If you find a sound you like form these guys, you can be assured that you never get any more of it from them. While I love that they are open to invention, I also miss their old sound. My favorite album from these guys has always been their major label debut, S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Their intriguing blend of metal, alternative rock, and funk was not only original and creative, but on this specific album it was an absolutely stunning music achievement. It helped lure me into the more experimental types of music, and it helped earn Incubus a high rank in my list of personal favorite groups.
The crystal, yet slamming guitar riffs lain down by Michael Einziger, mountainous bass lines of Dirk Lance, the cluttering, catchy beats of Jose Pastillas II, and, of course, the tight control and metallic crunch of Brandon Boyd's tenor voice are all permanent staples within the Incubus sound, but they all really stand out and are best accentuated on this work.
Released in 1997 under the Epic/Immortal label, this was one of several classic albums that helped usher in the `nu-metal' movement. Although it can hardly be said of their sound now, this album is characterized by its extremely metal edge sound. The ferocity of songs like the single "A Certain Shade of Green", "Calgone", and "New Skin" could easily win over the appreciation of any rocker. Also, the riffs are so thrashing and Brandon Boyd's siren screech (believe it or not, apart from being an incredible singer, Boyd can also scream right up there with the best of them) that even more "metal-headed" consumers could enjoy this CD.
Another great aspect to this album is its use of musical experimentation. Songs like "Vitamin" and "Nebula", lure the listener in with pliable, inviting build ups, usually in the verses, and in some amazing way bring the song to a grinding, fierce, metallic chorus. Yet, they can still bring the song full circle whenever and wherever they please. Take for example the wonderfully schizophrenic "Deep Inside." In listening to the verse, you'd think it was going to fill out as an atypical funk track, but as you hit the chorus, somehow you're tossed into this insanely hardcore thrash. But in some amazing way they can still bring you from out of the mosh pit and back into the funk. I know it sounds hard to imagine- when I first listened to it I could hardly believe it myself- but in some beautiful way it all works out so well.
But while this album is full of pit-worthy anthems, the real treat of this album is the one slow ballad, "Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song)." Call it a diamond in the rough if you will. The groovy rhythm of the bass, minimalist guitar work, and soothing blend of light drums and percussion set the mood for this song about a simple midnight rendezvous. This is probably the most ear-friendly song on the CD; absolutely anyone who has any taste for contemporary music could get a kick out of this song. Brandon's voice is truly saccharine on this track, and the solo in the bridge is the absolute perfect complement to an already awesome track. I would personally recommend anyone to buy this CD based on the merit of that song alone. But thankfully I don't have to since this album is chock full of excellent songwriting and masterful musicianship.
Even though S.C.I.E.N.C.E. may be a little twisted for those who haven't weaned themselves off of the mainstream, anyone with an open mind and a love for rock music will not regret buying this album. Especially since it's nearly eight years old and is sitting on most music store bargain bins at this very moment. I got my copy for only ten bucks, and I can say wholeheartedly that it was not a bad investment by any means. Give it a listen or two and see if you're not hooked on it within a few days, I dare you. This overlooked little musical treat sounds great and really foreshadows the group that Incubus would become in the oncoming years. If you love them now, then you need to hear where they started. Only then will you fully be able to grasp just how excellent of a group this is and how far they have left to go in their career.
